London's popularity as a technology center plummets ahead of Brexit

LISBON (Reuters) - London's popularity among technology companies in Europe has plummeted as Brexit approaches and the city holds its first place in a European industry survey published by narrow margin on Tuesday.

The survey of 540 founders of technology showed that the popularity of London was reduced to 41 percent in 2018 in a weighted vote, compared with 55 percent in 2017. Berlin followed with 40 percent, according to the survey conducted by the European Startup Initiative , a non-profit organization.

The popularity of London is partly due to the fact that it attracts more investment money for new companies than anywhere else. According to the survey, it captured 53 percent of all initial investments in the European Union last year.

But after Brexit, it could be harder or less attractive for new technology companies to be based in London.

"With Brexit looming, the question is pressing, how the still fragile network of European start centers will react when a significant bloodline is affected," the organization said in a statement.

The second level of European startup centers remained unchanged from the previous year, with Barcelona and Paris remaining in the third and fourth positions, with around 20 percent of the votes each.

The biggest winner was Lisbon, which jumped to fifth place in eighth place with 12 percent of the vote, ahead of Amsterdam, which fell to sixth place in the fifth. Lisbon has gained ground thanks to the city that hosts the largest technological event in Europe, the Web Summit.

The survey found that the five major cities received approximately 50 percent of the votes of all the founders.

Dublin and Stockholm fell from the top 10, replaced by Munich and Milan. Zurich jumped to ninth place thanks to its popularity among technology specialists, followed by Copenhagen.

The main question of the survey to the founders of the technology company was: "Where would you start if you could start all over again?"
