Livestock and biomass to prevent forest fires

Last June the Government of Aragon (Spain), through the Department of Rural Development and Sustainability, approved the aid for the execution of cooperation actions of agents of the agricultural sector, within the framework of the Rural Development Program for Aragon 2014 -2020.

One of the approved projects, coordinated by the CIRCE Foundation, will aim to improve the efficiency of forest maintenance work and fire prevention. For this, he will try to face a triple problem that exists in Aragon. First, the high costs of execution of silvicultural treatments. Second, the scarce use of local grazing to maintain the treated surfaces and the shortage of extensive grazing in certain areas of the region. Finally, the scarcity of demand and use of forest biomass, which prevents greater use of silvicultural waste.

CIRCE, together with the other project partners, will demonstrate the opportunities offered by managing the biomass of the complete tree to be used as fuel in other applications. This will be done through a change in the management of forestry work and the introduction of greater mechanization in the process, all of which will increase the profitability of this type of activity.

With this, the project will improve forest exploitation, by contributing to its cleaning and to the prevention of fires. But in addition it will also allow to increase and improve the conditions and the number of the extensive cattle exploitations, generating new zones of grazing.

To demonstrate the viability of these activities, a pilot experience will be carried out, based on the supply of this type of biomass to an agroindustrial consumer.

One of the main strengths of the cooperation group is the participation of the different agents of the value chain necessary to carry out the action, which will facilitate the continuation, replication and adoption of the results of the project. For this, Campos Rey participates as a beneficiary, a forestry company with extensive experience in the sector. Indasa, a dehydration agroindustry of Alfalfa, participates in the action as a great consumer of biomass. On the part of the livestock sector will participate the Association of Ranchers of Sierra and Canyons of Guara, as well as UAGA-COAG and, finally, will have three rural development groups of the districts of Cinco Villas (ADEFO), Hoya de Huesca (ADESHO ) and Somontano (CEDER Somontano), as agents very connected to reality and the actors in their areas.
