Recovery crews remove debris from the scene of a fatal accident on Sunday, October 7, 2018, when a limousine crashed into an SUV parked and unoccupied, killing 20 people at an intersection the day before in Schoharie, N.Y.

Past incident

The safety of limousines has been questioned previously, even recently when a grand jury in Suffolk County, New York, investigated the 2015 collision between a limousine and a truck that killed four women traveling through the wine zone in North Fork. , on Long Island. Four other people were injured in that accident.

The grand jury found that vehicles converted to limousines lack the safety measures usually found in passenger cars, such as side-impact airbags, reinforced rollover protection bars and accessible emergency exits.

When the report was published in December 2016, the then Suffolk County District Attorney, Tom Spota, dramatically raised a hollow metal bar to demonstrate "everything that was between eight women and an oncoming van."

The limousines are not manufactured by the major automotive companies and there is no regulatory agency in the US. UU That it guarantees that these vehicles are safe. The limousines actually start like normal cars, and in the case of the last accident, a Ford Excursion, and then the manufacturers of the second stage cut them to extend the length of the vehicles.

Once these vehicles are extended, no crash tests are performed and there are no mandatory safety controls to ensure that these vehicles are safe.
