LAX allows the boat at the airport but TSA says it's still a crime

Here is another thing travelers can consider taking when a trip takes them through the Los Angeles International Airport: marijuana.

Just be careful to take it on the plane.

A written policy issued by the airport police says small amounts of grass can now be taken to one of the busiest airports in the world. But, warns the police, possession of any amount remains a federal crime and TSA agents can find their stash.

What happens if they do is still a bit murky.

TSA spokeswoman Lorie Dankers said on Thursday the agents will not take it away from her, but she will summon the police and allow them to deal with that.

"The TSA's focus is on terrorism and security threats to the aircraft and its passengers," Dankers said in an email.

"Whether or not the passenger is allowed to travel with marijuana depends on the discretion of the law," he added.

If it turns out that a traveler does not carry more than 28.5 grams (approximately one ounce), or 8 grams in concentrated form, the airport police will simply release them.

"Because there is no crime," said airport official Alicia Hernández.

Even so, the police warn people to think twice before embarking on a vacation fed with cannabis.

"Passengers should bear in mind that marijuana laws vary from state to state and are advised to verify the laws of the states in which they plan to travel," says the statement published on the website flylax.com last January after that California legalize recreational marijuana.

So far, few or none of the other airports seem to have followed suit.

The San Diego International Airport does not have a policy on the boat, said spokesman Jonathan Heller.

In Colorado, one of the first states to legalize recreational marijuana in 2012, it is still illegal to take it to the Denver International Airport.

Airport spokeswoman Emily Williams says that's because possession is still a federal crime and air travel is governed by federal authorities.

In any case, few have been caught carrying marijuana, he said, and for those who have the fine it was mild if the amount was small.

"If it's a small amount, the TSA and the Denver Police Department will ask that person to get rid of it and if that person is willing to do that, it will move," he said.

Still, the best advice for travelers, says Douglas Kidd, executive director of the National Airlines Passenger Association, is to leave his hiding place at home. You can always buy more when you arrive.

"The first thing that the TSA will do is that if they find something that is illegal for federal purposes, they will send it to the local authorities," Kidd said.

"Now the local authorities can say: 'We're not going to do anything.'" But still, the delay could cause him to lose his flight. "
