On September 6, 2018, shortly after the remains of Typhoon Jebi soaked south of Hokkaido, a powerful earthquake It shook the Japanese island. The 6.6 magnitude earthquake, centered near the city of Tomakomai, came from a relatively low depth of 35 kilometers (22 miles). It shook the surface enough to release hundreds of landslides.
the Operational Earth Imager (OLI) in the Satellite Landsat 8 Images acquired from the extended landslides. An image, taken on September 15, 2018, shows landslides in a mountainous area east of Abira. By way of comparison, the other image shows the same area on July 26, 2017.
In a sign that the landslides were triggered by an earthquake, most of them seemed to start from the crests of the ridges, famous Geologist at the University of Sheffield Dave Petley about his
Blog. According to drone images, landslides also appeared to be shallow and mobile, he said.
Some experts in landslides have indicated that the presence of extremely saturated volcanic soils may have been a key ingredient behind such a widespread outbreak of landslides. Many of the hills in this area have layers of porous volcanic material known as pumice Layered on the ground, it can become very slippery when wet.
