Khashoggi died of strangulation to prevent him from asking for help: Saudi official
A Saudi official told ABC News that Jamal Khashoggi was killed when he was "placed in a stranglehold position" to prevent him from leaving the country's consulate in Turkey and asking for help.
The latest details in an evolutionary explanation come 19 days after Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist who had criticized the current government of his country, disappeared on October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
After Khashoggi was reported missing, the Saudi government initially said Khashoggi had left the consulate on the same day.
Two weeks later, last Friday, the country's prosecutor said that an initial investigation revealed that discussions between Khashoggi and the people who met him at the consulate led to a discussion and a fight, which resulted in the death of the journalist, according to the Arab Report in the Saudi Press Agency. (The English version said "fight", but the Arabic version said "fist fight").

The Saudi official told ABC News on Sunday that Khashoggi's body was handed over to a "local cooperator" in Istanbul for disposal. "The investigation into this continues," said the official.
The whereabouts of Khashoggi's body remains unknown.
Fifteen Saudis, members of the team sent to Turkey to meet with Khashoggi at the consulate in Istanbul, are among those detained by the Saudi prosecutor, according to the official.
"All 15 members of the team are among the detainees," the official said. "I do not have the names at this time."
The official also told ABC News that five Saudi intelligence chiefs who were relieved of their duties in connection with Khashoggi's death are not currently suspects in the investigation, even though they were "part of the chain of command of the operation" and that "the operative orders ... were written in such a way as to contribute to the series of events that led to the tragic death."
Turkish officials have claimed that a team of 15 Saudi men, including one who was identified by the press as an autopsy doctor, traveled to Turkey specifically to kill Khashoggi at the consulate.
Eighteen Saudi citizens were detained by the Saudi government in connection with the killing of Khashogui, according to the Saudi news agency.
Khashoggi had recently been living in the United States and served as an opinion columnist for the Washington Post newspaper.
