Kavanaugh's support of the Facebook executive unleashes a violent reaction for Zuckerberg

Hundreds of Facebook employees criticized a top executive after attending the hearing of Brett Kavanaugh, a Supreme Court nominee, in a show of support for the federal judge, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday night.

Joel Kaplan, vice president of global public policy for Facebook, is a long-time friend of Kavanaugh, whose nomination has been threatened by accusations of sexual misconduct dating back to his high school and university days in the early 1980s. . Kaplan attended the dramatic Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Sept. 27 in which lawmakers heard the testimony of Kavanaugh and one of her accusers, Christine Blasey Ford.

The newspaper reported that Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg was asked about Kaplan's attendance at a weekly question and answer session with employees last Friday. Zuckerberg said he would not have made the same decision as Kaplan, but that the executive had not violated any company policy.

However, Zuckerberg's response has failed to stifle the furor, as employees adopted a thread of internal discussion to criticize Kaplan's decision. That same Friday, Facebook's Chief Operating Officer, Sheryl Sandberg, said in a post in the discussion forum that she had spoken to the executive "about why I think it was a mistake for him to attend, given his role in the company.

"We support the right of people to do what they want in their personal time, but this was not a simple case," Sandberg added.

The newspaper reported that Zuckerberg and other executives are planning a city hall of the company on Friday to address the issue, with Kaplan calling the forum from Washington, D.C.

Kaplan, who, like Kavanaugh, is a former government official for George W. Bush, apologized in an internal forum for what The Journal described as "surprising employees because of his appearance," and said he did not expect his decision. It was controversial.

"Sexual assault is a subject that society has closed its eyes for too long, which aggravates the pain of each victim," Facebook spokeswoman Roberta Thomson told the newspaper. "Our leadership team recognizes that they made mistakes in handling the events of last week and we are grateful for all the comments from our employees."
