Kanye gives sneakers from Ugandan leader, gets African name

KAMPALA (Reuters) - Kanye West and Kim Kardashian gave the Uganda leader a pair of rapper shoes on Monday and gave them the names "Uganda" at a meeting to promote tourism in East Africa.

Days after a rampant meeting with the president of the United States, Donald Trump, in the White House, a more moderate Westerner gave Yoweri Museveni a pair of white sports shoes made by his own company that he and Kardashian signed with a marker .

The couple arrived on Friday and is staying on a luxurious safari in a national park that features spectacular waterfalls and wild games that include buffalo, antelopes, lions, giraffes and wild boar.

Museveni's office said the president gave names to entertainment stars from the United States in Uganda.

He called West, who last month declared that he wanted to be known simply as "Ye", "Kanyesigye", a common name among the Banyankore, the ethnic group Museveni is a native of. Kardashian was given the name "Kemigisha," which means "the one who received the blessings of God," Museveni's office said in a statement.

West "expressed his happiness at being in Uganda, describing it as his second home," the statement said, adding that West pledged to install a "world-class tourism school in the country and said it will be a tourism foundation not only in Uganda but also in Uganda, the East African region in general. "

Museveni, 74, has been in office since 1986 and in January signed a law that removed an age limit of 75 years for presidential candidates, a measure that critics pointed to remain in power indefinitely.

One of his most vocal critics is Robert Kyagulanyi, a pop star and politician turned politician, known by his stage name Bobi Wine, who has won strong support among young Ugandans.
