JetBlue will add cheaper and cheaper rates to the "basic economy" in 2019
JetBlue Airways plans to introduce basic economy fares, the cheapest and simplest fares that passengers love to protest.
The tickets, which will not be sold until the end of 2019, are designed to help JetBlue attract more price-sensitive customers, travelers who go to the basic discount store rates such as Spirit and Frontier and the basic Delta, American and United.
"At JetBlue, we never liked the 'no frills' approach," JetBlue president Joanna Geraghty said in an email to employees. "But with these competitors that now offer basic economics on many routes we fly, customer behavior suggests that our success is at risk if we do not interrupt this market by lowering rates without sacrificing experience."
The airline insists that its experience in basic economics will be different from that of its competitors, and Geraghty said: "We will not make them feel like second-class citizens." Unlike most airlines, JetBlue offers free internet service in flight and live television.
The airline said that its basic economy passengers will be able to carry a standard handbag in addition to a personal item. United it does not allow travelers who bring a carry-on bag, unless it fits under the seat, and American not until reversed its policy in September.
There will be some restrictions with JetBlue's basic economy rates, of course. The airline did not provide details, but said they could include policies on boarding position, seats and change / cancellation. Passengers who buy the last fare of the basic economy fares of American, Delta and United, can not change or cancel their ticket and generally do not get seats until the last minute.
Alaska Airlines adds a basic economic rate, too
JetBlue is not the only operator that adds a basic rate of economic type. In April, Alaska Airlines announced plans to introduce a new "savings rate." It will be presented at the end of 2018.
Like JetBlue, the airline says its Saver Fare will offer more benefits than other operators' basic economy rates, especially early seat assignments. Those seats, however, will be in the back of the plane and possibly in the middle. A handbag will be allowed.
Alaska Saver Fare passengers will board last and their tickets can not be changed or canceled.

Basic Economy: Are those cheaper tickets the right ones for you?
American Airlines is getting rid of an unpopular policy after the pullback. As of September 5, the carrier will allow passengers who buy their "basic economy" tickets to bring a handbag and not just a personal item that fits under the seat in front of them.
