Israel releases two Palestinian Authority officials from custody
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel freed two Palestinian Authority officials on Monday who were arrested over the weekend, police said, but did not elaborate on the case.
The two men who were arrested were Adnan Gheith, who holds the largely ceremonial post of the governor of Jerusalem appointed by the Palestinians, and Jihad Al-Faqeeh, the head of Palestinian intelligence in the city.
They were arrested on suspicion of aiding the kidnapping of a Palestinian resident of Jerusalem, his lawyers said.
Gheith's lawyer, Mohammed Mahmoud, said his client was ordered to stay away from Jerusalem, stay in house arrest for seven days and pay a fine of 20,000 shekels ($ 5,500).
The official Palestinian news agency, WAFA, said that President Mahmoud Abbas had spoken to both men by telephone after his release.
According to a report on Israeli television Reshet 13, the Palestinian resident of Jerusalem abducted two weeks ago has an Israeli identity card and a US citizenship.
The Palestinian Authority sought him, according to the report, for helping to sell properties in the Old City of Jerusalem to Jewish buyers.
