Meng Hongwei was reported missing after traveling to China.
(AP)Interpol asked China for information about its missing Chinese president after he disappeared on a trip home, citing concerns about his welfare.
The international police agency based in Lyon said in a brief statement on Saturday that it used law enforcement channels to present its application on the status of 64-year-old Meng Hongwei.
The agency "expects an official response from the Chinese authorities to address concerns about the president's welfare," the statement said.

China, which is in the middle of a week's vacation, did not immediately respond to the request.
Meng's wife said he had not heard from him since he left Lyon, France, at the end of September. France has launched its own investigation.
French authorities said Meng boarded a plane and arrived in China, but his whereabouts are unknown.
Before assuming the position of head of Interpol in 2016, Meng served as deputy minister of public security in China, among other positions within the Chinese security establishment. Meng is the first Chinese official to head Interpol. Its term is expected to last until 2020.
the Morning south of China, a Hong Kong newspaper, has suggested that Meng may have been the ultimate target of an ongoing campaign against corruption in China. The newspaper reported that after landing, Meng was "retired" for questioning because of what he said were "disciplinary authorities." The term generally describes researchers in the ruling Communist Party who investigate graft and political disloyalty.
His duties in China would have put him very close to the previous leaders, some of whom fell in conflict with the campaign of the Chinese leader Xi Jinping. He probably dealt with former security chief Zhou Yongkang, who is now serving life in prison for corruption.
