India's super intelligent teenagers invented an application to deal with e-waste

Solving global problems is not on the task list for most teens.

But this group of five teenage girls from Delhi, India, is far from average. The team took on the challenge of inventing a way to dispose of electronic waste in an environmentally friendly way.

"Electronic waste is usually disposed of as regular garbage, which causes all kinds of ambient pollution and great Health dangers, "the team told" GMA "during a group presentation.

Discarded technological equipment (telephones, computers, televisions) contains substances that cause environmental damage and health risks, especially if they are treated improperly, according to the Global E-waste Monitor of 2017, a report produced in part by the University of The United Nations.

Calling themselves Team Cantavits, the girls worked together to create a mobile application called Eedo that allows full communication between the producers of electronic waste and the authorized recyclers. This summer they won the senior division at the Technovation 2018 Global Launch Summit in San Jose, California.

They were one of the 12 finalists of the team in the competition who collectively received more than $ 50,000 in scholarships to continue with the technological entrepreneurial spirit and bring their applications to the market. Iridescent, a non-profit organization that works to empower underrepresented young people around the world, founded the Technovation challenge in 2010.

An Iridescent spokesperson said the Cantavits Team is already meeting with e-waste experts in India to obtain licensed recyclers to join the application.

Q: Do you think your application has the potential to reach a global market?

A: Definitely, because our application does not only reach people who are like local scrap dealers or authorized recyclers, our application reaches almost all sectors of society.

Q: What are you doing rather than developing an application?

A: We are not only coding just to create a market, we are coding to solve a problem that is real and to give a solution for that is a big problem.

Q: What are you doing rather than developing an application?

A: We really want to solve a problem in the community and we want to save the environment.
