Hurricane Willa moves inland after hitting the coast of Mexico
Hurricane Willa began to lose energy during the night after roaring in a stretch of beach towns, fishing villages and farms on the Pacific coast of the Mexican state of Sinaloa as category 3 storm.
Damage assessments were rare overnight due to darkness and poor communications, but federal officials said the power had been removed at some points and there were early reports of flimsy structures with tin roofs that were damaged.
Before reaching the mainland near Forest Island with winds of 120 mph (195 kph) on Tuesday night, Willa swept a penal colony on the high seas about 60 miles (100 kilometers) in the Pacific. Authorities declined to comment on the precautions taken in the prison, citing security concerns, but said the safety of the inmates was a priority.
The US National Hurricane Center UU He said the forward movement of the storm had accelerated to 17 mph (28 kph) on Tuesday night and was expected to weaken rapidly. However, he warned that the storm could still cause heavy rains in parts of the states of Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa, with possible floods and landslides in mountainous areas.
Willa landed about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Mazatlan, a tourist city that houses high-rise hotels and around 500,000 people, including many American and Canadian expatriates.
Although the hotels, restaurants and shops were approached, people ventured into the coastal boulevard of Mazatlan to watch a spectacular sunset as the hurricane The sky darkened to the south.
Alberto Hernandez, a worker at a hotel in the city of Teacapan, near where the storm touched down, expressed his confidence before it hit the building. He and his son, who also works at the hotel, stayed at work, although the rest of his family had left the area.
"We have had rain all day, there is no one on the streets, everything is closed," Hernández said. "But not everyone wanted to leave, although the authorities made it clear that whoever stays does so at their own risk."
Torrential rains began in the afternoon, and emergency officials said they had evacuated more than 4,250 people in the coastal cities and had established 58 shelters before the dangerous storm. The schools were ordered closed.
When Willa approached, the beach of Mazatlan almost disappeared, with waves hitting the coastal boulevard under black clouds. Some surfers enjoyed the big waves, while the streets on land were almost deserted, except for the workers who climbed the windows of hotels, shops and homes.
Some families took refuge in the Mazatlan convention center, spreading blankets along the walls to wait for the storm.
"The house we live in is not well built," said Sergio Ernesto Meri Franco, who rents a study.
Bob Swanson, a Canadian who spends two to six months of the year at his home in the Cerritos neighborhood near the coast in Mazatlan, said he filled his washing machine with water, filled his home's fuel tank and gassed his car in case I needed to go to the mountains for safety.
"I'm waiting for a bit of breathing," he said over the phone, adding that he was sitting on his porch and smoking a cigarette.
