How Seoul tacitly endorses the brutality of Pyongyang
Since the summit of President Trump and Kim Jong Un in June, the two leaders have issued a series of statements in English. The president of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, also intervened, with vague words that promote the hope of denuclearization and a better life for the people of North Korea. However, Mr. Moon tells a different story in Korean.
Consider the speeches that the president of South Korea delivered in North Korea last month. At a dinner on September 18, he stated that he was "really amazed by the development of Pyongyang." He did not say how this "development" has had any positive effect on the people of North Korea. Outside of Pyongyang, the North Koreans suffer. One third of children in North Korea are undernourished, while the regime concentrates its resources on nuclear warheads, missiles and luxuries to maintain the content of the elites.
In his speech, Mr. Moon expressed hope that the inter-Korean collaboration could "cover the entire continent to reach Russia and Europe, and across the sea to reach Asean and India." He did not mention the United States. He also told Mr. Kim that if they "unite their heads and hearts," they will find ways to develop "the military, the economy, society and culture of South and North Korea." However, about 80% of North Korea's military, 1.2 million troops, is still ahead. deployed, ready to attack. North Korea's long-range artillery is ready to attack from Kaesong Heights.
Mr. Moon also recalled that during their first in-person meeting with Mr. Kim, the two crossed the military demarcation line "by the hand, like two loving lovers." That's good, but since then Mr. Kim has not done anything to reduce the threat his country represents to his neighbor. And he continues to abuse more than 100,000 men, women and children in his notorious political prison camps.
The day after dinner, Mr. Moon spoke before thousands of the "main class" of North Korea, gathered for a gymnastic and artistic festival. He used Kim's exact phrase to avoid a joint commitment to a Korean peninsula "without nuclear weapons or nuclear threats." The truth is that the South has been free of nuclear weapons since 1991. It is the North that must give up its weapons. For Mr. Kim, the denuclearization of "the entire Korean Peninsula" means taking South Korea out of the security of the United States nuclear umbrella. Mr. Moon actually announced his support for Mr. Kim's goal of ending the alliance between the United States and South Korea.
Mr. Moon also said that his heart was "hot and throbbing" when he saw the country that his North Korean brothers were building. He expressed admiration for the North Koreans who maintained "the pride of the nation" even in difficult times, possibly a reference to the famine of the 1990s. The truth is that when the vital support aid to North Korea from the allied communist countries stopped flowing in the 90s, the regime was not reformed. Any precious resource that could be obtained was given only to the military and political elites. Those who occupy a lower place in North Korea singer The social classification system was condemned to starvation, their access to food, medicines and other aids was cut off. The regime blamed the US UU And he told his subjects that, in spite of the suffering, they maintained the pride of the nation during that "arduous march". Mr. Moon's words lent support to this fallacious story.
The president of South Korea declared that the two leaders had accepted the principle of jaju-wonchik, or unification through self-determination. This principle is derived from North Korea joke The ideology of self-sufficiency. A quick search in the Korean language of the term will display propaganda websites of North Korea, such as Uriminzokkiri and the Korean Central News Agency. "Unification through self-determination" also excludes outsiders, especially the US. UU
Mr. Moon's speeches can be read as the construction of peace. But for those familiar with North Korean ideology, a discourse that tacitly supports juche only validates Kim's brand of totalitarianism. It is a statement of support for North Korean ideology and all that goes with it, including nuclear weapons. Mr. Moon's speech gave legitimacy to Mr. Kim's corrupt and horrible rule.
Opposition to the Pyongyang regime against the North Korean people and their threats to the south has become increasingly difficult with Mr. Moon in office. His government has reduced funding for organizations that promote human rights in the North by more than 90%, stopped the launching of balloons and the broadcast of loudspeakers in the Demilitarized Zone and has been censoring the content of USB USB devices smuggled by activists in North Korea. It is hard to imagine how Mr. Moon will never go from Mr. Kim's warm praise to addressing the dire human rights situation of the North Koreans.
