The leader of Amnesty International said that human rights movements are being galvanized worldwide by the actions of the president of the United States. Donald Trump.
Kumi Naidoo, who took over as Amnesty International's secretary general last month, told The Associated Press in an interview that the policies of the Trump administration have spurred campaigns in climate change, the equality of women and other issues that preceded the Trump presidency.
Naidoo, born in South Africa and formerly the environmental group Greenpeace, identified climate change and authoritarian governments, which he described as a "slide towards fascism", as the main threats to human rights and well-being worldwide.
"I would say, bluntly, that most of our political and business leadership around the world is suffering from a very serious case of cognitive dissonance, so I refer to a denial of reality," he said.
At the same time, Naidoo said he believes the great attention that the president of the United States attracts also helps moderate Trump's disorienting influence.
"If you look at Donald Trump, for example, he has essentially been the biggest mobilizer of the climate movement, the women's movement, (and) the people of color," Naidoo said.
Trump, for example, has opposed the participation of the United States in a historic climate agreement. And his treatment of women also motivated his critics to organize demonstrations around the world focused on women's rights right after taking office.
"The optimism for me is that young people, I have never seen the level of mobilization of young people all over the world," Naidoo said. "I've never seen the level of mobilization of women around the world."
Naidoo was in Greece to visit a very crowded refugee camp on the island of Lesbos. He called on Greece and the European Union to support an emergency evacuation of the site before winter because of concerns that the conditions there are unsafe.
Her trip coincided with the publication of a 44-page Amnesty report on the difficulties faced by refugee women in Greece.
