Google said it is disconnecting its unpopular Google+ social network after admitting a software error that exposed the personal information of up to 500,000 users.

The technological giant announced the news in the company blog, revealing the user's privacy problem committed for the first time, despite having known it for seven months.

"We discovered and immediately solved this error in March 2018," wrote Ben Smith, vice president of engineering for the company. The software flaw affected the way the social network, created to compete with Facebook but never seriously challenged it, interacted with third-party applications.


"We're closing Google+ for consumers," Smith added, admitting that the product was, at best, disappointing. "While our engineering teams have put a lot of effort and dedication into creating Google+ over the years, it has not achieved widespread adoption by consumers or developers ... The Google+ consumer version currently has Little use and commitment: 90 percent of Google+ users Sessions are less than five seconds. "


The company will close Google+ for 10 months, pointing to a close in August 2019.



The Wall Street Journal broke the news. of the software error, informing that Google chose not to reveal the problem "due to fears that doing so will attract regulatory control and cause damage to the reputation".

The WSJ reported that the exhibition dates back to 2015, although the company did not comment on how long the information was exposed.


The information accessed a user's profile information, including name, email address, occupation, gender and age, according to the blog post, which added: "The error meant that the applications also had access to the Profile fields that were shared with the user, but not marked as public ".


Up to 438 external applications may have been connected with the defective software. The company stated in its publication that there was no evidence that "any developer was aware of this error, or ... that any profile information was misused".


The company also introduced a series of new privacy controls, including limiting applications that can access Gmail, call logging and text message data.
