This spring, US investigators arrested a man they accused of being the "Golden State assassin" with at least 12 murders and more than 50 rapes between 1974 and 1986. He had identified it by loading the murderer's DNA into the GEDMatch genealogy database. People can upload data there that they got from 23andMe, for example, and then look for relatives. The researchers found distant relatives of the killer in this way and were able to narrow the killer's identity sufficiently by providing more information about gender and age, explains the science journal Science, in which the research paper has been published.
