From Cheeseheads to the World Series final: five LA sports teams in eight hours
From Cheeseheads to the World Series final: five LA sports teams in eight hours
Game 5 of the World Series triggered an Equinox of Sports in Los Angeles, where the 5 most important professional sports leagues played the same day, in the same city. USA TODAY Sports Josh Peter and Sandy Hooper beat them all.
Sandy Hooper, USA TODAYLOS ANGELES - Is Sunday a day of rest? Maybe for you, friend.
For me, Sunday was a unique sports show in its class, and in a span of eight hours I saw:
Five body checks.
Four face to face.
Two annotations.
Two goals
A Zamboni.
Not to mention the foam cheese heads, the bobblehead dolls Lou Williams, the super fan of the NBA Jimmy Goldstein and the last of the World Series.
I saw hockey, soccer, football, basketball and basketball players played by professional athletes during what was called the Los Angeles Sports Equinox. In summary, five of the professional sports teams of this city - Dodgers, Rams, Scissors, Kings Y Galaxy - They were scheduled to play on Sunday. What presented the challenge of determining if it was possible, or healthy, to reach all five games.
It could be done? Not without:
1. Sandy Hooper. She is a senior video producer for USA TODAY Sports, and was the one responsible for remembering where I parked my car. (She also produced a video documenting the adventure.)
2. Sports shoes. On foot, we covered almost seven miles, approximately the same distance as soccer players during their games, and climbed 26 floors. (Much of the mileage came while walking from parking lots to places).
3. The wisdom of John Wooden. It helped to remember one of his favorite sayings: "Be quick but do not rush".
So fast, but not to rush things, let's go to the highlights:
The best decision: Taking a pedicab from a parking lot in the USC to the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. It meant we arrived in time to see Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers throw a beautiful 41-yard pass to Davante Adams, and also see the Rams and Green Bay Packers score touchdowns in a span of one minute and 37 seconds.
Worst decision: Resting a cup of Diet Coke on what appeared to be a disjointed edge of a urinal at StubHub Center. The good news: there is always more Diet Coke.
Best fans: Galaxy fans. The most delightful moment of a group whose fans sing and wave flags throughout the game came after each of the two goals scored by Galaxy forward Ola Kamara.
The PA toned announcer: "Goal by Ola!"
The crowd shouted again: "Ola!"
PENNSYLVANIA. Announcer: "Ola!"
Crowd: "Wave!"
PENNSYLVANIA. Announcer: "Thank you."
Crowd in unison: "You're welcome!"
Worst fans: The fans of the Dodgers. Did you really boo your manager, Dave Roberts, before Game 5 of the World Series? Yes, you did it!
Most moving moment: In the Kings game, after a moment of silence was observed among the victims of Saturday's mass shooting in the Pittsburgh synagogue, the choir of children of the Jewish Community of Los Angeles sang the national anthem.
Second worst decision: Never think twice before consuming a soft ice cream served with Oreo biscuit and granola, three peanut butter crackers, shredded chicken, grilled steak, rice and beans, quesadilla, an apple, Diet Coke and coffee.
Getting to the meeting places only required 37.7 miles, but it felt like almost twice that distance. Thanks, L.A. traffic! This is how we shot:
First stop: No early fights.
Los Angeles Kings vs New York Rangers at the Staples Center
He arrived at the seats: 12:30 p.m.
It was 62 degrees when we settled into our seats and the Zamboni was making his final passes through the hockey rink. The disc fell at 12:40 p.m., but unfortunately the gloves did not.
There are no fights.
There are no goals.
It was not before 4:35 that it had passed since the game clock and it was time to hit the road!
Second stop: two goals in two minutes.
Los Angeles Galaxy vs Houston Dynamo at StubHub Center
He reached the seats: 2 p.m.
When we got there, the game was tied 0-0 and I was making fun of a sport famous for its low score. But the joke was on me. We saw Kamara score twice in three minutes, sending the festive crowd into a frenzy and, after a 23-minute stay, we headed back.
Third stop: foam cheese heads everywhere.
Los Angeles Rams vs. Green Bay Packers at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles
Seating received: 3:30 p.m.
When we arrived at the Coliseum, it was difficult to know if we were in Los Angeles or in Green Bay. Fans of the Green Bay Packers, many with foam cheese heads, were everywhere.
As we made our way to our seats, the crowd roared. Rams landing! And we missed it! Do not worry, we were soon in our seats and witnessed the Rams and Packers trading touchdowns as their battle heated up.
Then, once again, we were in motion.
Fourth stop: Superfan of the NBA and bobbleheads
Los Angeles Clippers against Washington Wizards, Staples Center
He arrived in seats: 4:50 p.m. In time to watch the pregame shoot before 6:30 p.m. alert
Who would come to a Clippers game in the middle of Game 5 of the World Series? Superfan of the NBA Jimmy Goldstein, for example. And hordes of fans who happily accepted the Bob Williams dolls.
When Avery Bradley of the Clippers made a triple to open the scoring, we soon left the Staples Center.
Things were getting tense in the World Series.
Fifth stop: Another loss in the World Series.
Los Angeles Dodgers against Boston Red Sox, Dodger Stadium
He arrived in seats: 7:20 p.m.
We saw Clayton Kershaw throw in what could have been his last appearance for the Dodgers. But the evocative moment came after Manny Machado struck out at the end of the game.
Slowly, Machado returned to the Dodgers' dugout when the Boston Red Sox players cheerfully left their dugout and joined their teammates who were celebrating on the field. The Dodgers had lost the World Series in their own field for the second year in a row.
But the Angelenos found help elsewhere. The Rams beat the Packers, 29-27, and with 8-0 they remain the only undefeated team in the NFL.
Sure, the Galaxy loses a shredder, 3-2, that got them out of the playoffs. But the Kings came together to beat the New York Rangers and ended a six-game losing streak. The Clippers also won and improved to 4-2, which shows that you can see good basketball in L.A. even when LeBron is not on the court.
For the record, we arrived at Dodger Stadium in time for the seventh inning and sang "Take me to the ball game." In fact, you take me out to five ball games.
Preferably in L.A., any day of the week.
