(Thomas Samson, Pool via AP)One target of a new French crackdown on money flowing to Iranian intelligence is a suspected diplomat in a failed attempt to attack a group of Iranian exiles, officials said.
The French government also froze funds from the internal security section of Iran's Intelligence Ministry and another Iranian individual on Tuesday.
The move to cut cash to the diplomat was "preventive, directed and proportional," said the French Foreign Ministry. Officials noted his determination to fight terrorism, especially in his own territory.
An attempt to attack the group of Iranian exiles was to take place at a demonstration on June 30 near Paris, authorities said.
"An incident of such seriousness in our national territory can not go unpunished," the officials said in a statement, according to Reuters.
The movement came when about 200 police raided the Zahra Center, a Shiite Islamic center, and the houses of its leaders in the port city of Dunkirk. France 24 informed. Apparently, the leaders of the Islamic center were suspected of supporting "terrorist organizations".
The police had been monitoring the activities of the center "due to the strong support of its leaders to various terrorist organizations and in favor of movements that support ideas that are contrary to the values" of France, according to France 24.
It is not clear if the asset freeze and the raid on the Islamic center were connected.
