Former infielder David Bell was hired as the Cincinnati Reds coach
David Bell was hired as manager of the Cincinnati Reds, tasked with helping turn a team that slipped to a 67-95 record and finished last in the National League Central.
The Reds said on Sunday they had been awarded a three-year contract that includes a team option by 2022. The Cincinnati native, 46, will be presented at a press conference on Monday.
The Reds fired Bryan Price after a 3-15 start, and Jim Riggleman was interim manager for the rest of the season.
Bell was a minor league manager for the Reds from 2009 to 2009, became the Chicago Cubs third base coach in 2013, the assistant hitting coach of San Luis the following year and the bench coach of the Cardinals during the next three years. He was the vice president of player development for San Francisco last season.
Bell and his father, the executive of the Red headquarters, Buddy, become the fourth duo of parents and children who serve as managers of major leagues, and join George and Dick Sisler, Bob and Joel Skinner, and Bob and Aaron Boone. Buddy Bell directed the Detroit Tigers (1996-1998), the Colorado Rockies (2000-2002) and Kansas City Royals (2005-2007).
David Bell becomes the 63rd manager in the history of the Reds. He is the first coach hired this offseason. The Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Angels, the Minnesota Twins, the Texas Rangers and the Toronto Blue Jays still have vacancies.
