Ford proposes a future without traffic lights.

Vehicle communication technology to everything, most commonly referred to as V2X, is ready to change the way that cars operate in the very near future.

Numerous car manufacturers are working on V2X systems, some of which are already available. Among the automakers is Ford, who believes that the technology could one day eliminate the traffic lights.

The automaker announced on Wednesday that it will test an Intersection Priority Management (IPM) system on the streets of Milton Keynes, United Kingdom. The system is Ford's way of showing that cars do not always have to stop at an intersection or traffic signal. Instead, the system suggests speeds that allow a car to pass through an intersection without stopping altogether. The technology is inspired by the way humans maneuver through crowds of people. We do not stop when we meander, but adjust our speed to avoid colliding with other people.

Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications allow cars in one area to know the location, direction of travel and speed of each, while the IPM system identifies the next intersections. The IPM also calculates all the routes of the surrounding cars and produces the optimum speed so that each of them passes through an intersection without crashing or stopping. The researchers envisaged a similar system in 2016 using a simulation.

While technology sounds quite difficult to implement in the real world, where not all cars on the road will have V2V technology, it could be an important facet of future self-driving cars. Ford said it is possible that with a system developed for autonomous vehicles, the only time the car stops is when a driver arrives at his destination. Ford is testing the technology for the first time with people behind the wheel, but IPM may not need people or traffic signs any day.

MIP comes as funded by the government U.K Autodrive Program, that analyzes the next technologies of automobiles, concludes. Ford has worked to help develop new safety technologies in the last two years and has also shown a collision warning system at the intersection and an Optimal Green Light Speed Warning. The latter helps the cars to synchronize with the traffic lights and helps avoid red signals.

While Ford works to eliminate traffic lights, Honda is also working to make intersections a safer place. The company have developed an "intelligent intersection" with V2X technology that can alert drivers of obstacles and help avoid a crash. Technology began testing in Ohio this month.
