Floods of tropical storms traps Phoenix automobiles
Remains of a tropical storm on Tuesday drenched parts of the southwestern desert, trapping some drivers in the flooded streets of Phoenix as authorities prepared for possible flash floods in Arizona, central Utah and elsewhere.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for the Phoenix area, saying that more than 2 inches (5 centimeters) of rain fell in the Phoenix metropolitan area mid-morning and that additional rain was expected. The day was the second-wettest day in the city in October, the agency said.
Meteorologist Jaret Rogers said the rain seemed to dissipate with scattered showers predicted for the rest of the day and the next. The humidity of the storm was expected to leave Arizona on Wednesday afternoon and bring rain to Utah and Colorado.
The flash flood watches remained in effect during parts of those two states.
Phoenix sees sudden heavy rains during the summer monsoon, but rain that falls continuously is a rarity.
Heavy rains caused the river bed to overflow, pouring murky water at an intersection north of Phoenix. The firefighters moved through the water up to their waist to reach the people trapped in their cars. The crews removed at least six people, including a child, from the vehicles and took them one by one to a fire truck.
About 10 vehicles, including a bus, were either detained in the water or attempted to drive through it.
Rogers warned that even a short burst of rain could cause flooding in some areas.
"It will not take much to increase the flood potential," Rogers said. "Once the soil is saturated, basically it can not contain more water, it just runs off instead of being absorbed by the soil."
The wet weather It was a factor in numerous accidents on the Phoenix area freeways, but no serious crashes were reported, said Private Kameron Lee of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
Authorities warned drivers to avoid entering the streets or washed with water.
