Fisher Space Pen Celebrates 50 Years in Space with Apollo 7 Pen Set
Fifty years ago, Walt Cunningham became one of the first NASA Apollo astronauts to fly into space and, on board the same mission, one of the First people to use a space pen.
Cunningham, along with his Apollo 7 crewmates, Wally Schirra and Donn Eisele, spent 11 days in Earth orbit checking the Apollo command and service module systems. Launched on top of a Saturn IB rocket On October 11, 1968, the three astronauts confirmed that the ship was ready to support the subsequent crews on flights to the Moon and back.
They also verified that a ballpoint pen equipped with a pressurized ink cartridge was suitable for writing in microgravity.
"Fifty years ago, I flew with the first Space Pen flown in Apollo 7. I trusted that then, and it's still the only pen I trust here on Earth, "says Cunningham as he reproduces on a small plaque that accompanies a new commemorative edition of the original pen.
"We are extremely proud to celebrate 50 years in space," said Cary Fisher, president of Fisher Space Pen. "My father, Paul Fisher, was a visionary who epitomized American entrepreneurship and innovation, our products are sold all over the world, but we are still a family business that manufactures high quality writing instruments and state of the art, proudly manufactured in the U.S. . "
Contrary to an urban legend that NASA spent several years and millions of dollars developing a pen for its astronauts to use (while Soviet cosmonauts simply used pencils), the space pen began as the idea of Paul Fisher, a established manufacturer of pens, which invested his own $ 1 million in his invention. Faced with the need for gravity to lower the ink, the Fisher Anti-Gravity 7 (AG-7) pen of 1965 used a pressurized cartridge and gel-type ink, so he continued working by holding the pen upside down, in extreme temperatures and even submarine.
And, as it turned out, in space.
Realizing his pen could be a good fit for astronautsFisher sent samples of the AG-7 to NASA, where he was submitted and passed a series of tests. The Space Pen made its debut in orbit on board. Apollo 7. A year later it was also adopted by the Russian space program. For five decades, Space Pens has been aboard each human spaceflight mission.

The apollo 7 50th anniversary The Gold Titanium Astronaut Space Pen reproduces the AG-7 model in brass coated with gold titanium nitride. The barrel is engraved with a representation of the Apollo 7 spacecraft flying through a field of stars. Each ballpoint pen is numbered individually and is inscribed "APOLLO 7 Anniversary" and "First Apollo Crew | Oct. 11-22, 1968."
Limited to only 500 pieces, the pen comes in a transparent black lacquer gift box with a commemorative medallion featuring the Apollo 7 spacecraft on one side and the Fisher Space Pen "50" logo on the other. The set is packaged in an outer box of gilded cardboard and in a black velvet bag.
The Apollo 7 50th Anniversary Gold Titanium Astronaut Space Pen is available through the Fisher Space Pen Company website for $ 500.
In addition to being the inaugural flight of the Space Pen and first manned mission of NASA's Apollo lunar landing program, Apollo 7 was also the first space flight of three people in the United States and the first mission to include a live television broadcast from a US spacecraft.
