Facebook now says that the data breach affected 29 million users, the impact of the details
(Reuters) - Cyber attackers stole data from 29 million Facebook accounts using an automated program that was moved from one friend to another, Facebook Inc (FB.O) announced on Friday, when the social media company said that the largest data theft in history reached less than the 50 million profiles initially reported.
The company said it would send messages to affected users in the next few days to tell them what kind of information was accessed in the attack.
The breach has left users more vulnerable to targeted phishing attacks and could raise concerns about the publication of a service whose privacy, moderation and security practices have been questioned by a series of scandals, said cybersecurity experts and financial analysts. .
The attackers took profile details such as birth dates, employers, education history, religious preference, types of devices used, pages followed and recent searches and location records of 14 million users.
For the other 15 million users, the infringement was limited to name and contact details. In addition, attackers could see publications and lists of friends and groups of approximately 400,000 users.
Lawmakers and investors have been more concerned that Facebook is not doing enough to safeguard the data.
The company's stock rose 0.25 percent on Friday when Wall Street recovered after a six-day losing streak. The Nasdaq composite index gained 2.29 percent.
Facebook reduced the number of affected users from its original estimate after the researchers reviewed the activity in the accounts that may have been affected. Even so, experts in cyber security warned that attackers could use information stolen from targeted phishing scams.
"The bottom line is that all of this data is still available," said Corey Milligan, principal investigator of cyber security firm Armor Inc.
Facebook vice president Guy Rosen told reporters that the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States has asked the company to limit the descriptions of the attackers due to an ongoing investigation.
Rosen revealed that, although the intent of the attackers has not been determined, it did not appear that they were motivated by the upcoming parliamentary elections in the United States Congress on November 6.
He said the attack affected a "broad" spectrum of users, but refused to break down the number of affected per country.

Facebook said it was still investigating whether the attackers took action beyond the theft of data, such as the publication of accounts, but found no additional misuse.
The hackers did not steal personal messages or financial data and did not use their access to accounts to access user accounts on other websites, Facebook said.
A FOCUS ON TRUST
Rosen said the company "would do everything possible to gain the trust of users."
The company previously warned that the profits would be affected by the expenses related to the breach.
The vulnerability that hackers exploited existed from July 2017 until the end of last month, when Facebook noticed an unusual increase in the use of its "see as" feature.
This feature allows users to verify the privacy settings when they see how their profile looks for others. But three errors in the Facebook software allowed someone to "see how" to post and navigate from the other user's Facebook account.
The attackers used the "see as" flaw with "a small handful" of accounts they controlled to capture data from their Facebook friends, then used a tool they developed to rape friends of friends and beyond, Rosen said.
Facebook solved the problem last month and asked 90 million users to re-login their accounts, many of them just as a precaution.
Security experts have said the disclosure of Facebook's initial breach came sooner than it probably would have before the enactment in May of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation, which requires notification within 72 hours to the conclusion of a commitment.
The EU's main data controller on Facebook, the Irish data protection commissioner, opened an investigation into the rape last week. Authorities from other jurisdictions, including the states of Connecticut and New York, are also investigating the attack.
Regulators around the world have ongoing consultations on another issue that came to light in March: how Cambridge Analytica political data firm inappropriately agreed to the details of the profiles of 87 million Facebook users.
Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission (JPPC) has launched an investigation into the social media company, the Nikkei newspaper reported Friday.
"We are working with local regulators, including the JPPC, on data breach," the company said in a statement sent by email. Facebook has about 28 million people active in a month in Japan.
