BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Amazon could face a threat other than just the EU's antitrust scrutiny after a key EU legislator announced proposals aimed at curbing the use of merchants' data in online markets to increase sales of own brand products.

In April, with the aim of guaranteeing the equality of conditions between technological giants like Google, Amazon and Apple and traditional companies, the European Commission presented a draft of rules to avoid unfair commercial practices. 

The proposal is specifically aimed at app stores, search engines, e-commerce sites and hotel reservation websites. 

Legislators from the European Parliament, whose approval is necessary to ensure that the proposal becomes legislation and under pressure to be seen as friendly to the consumer before the May elections, have since submitted approximately 680 amendments to reinforce the draft . 

The key among them is the proposal last week by the center-left Danish legislator Christel Schaldemose, the main parliamentary negotiator, which focuses on a case that is being investigated by her compatriot, the European Competition Commissioner, Margrethe Vestager.

Schaldemose has proposed establishing Chinese walls between subsidiaries, according to a draft seen by Reuters. She wants her committee to vote on the amendments on December 6.   

Last month, Vestager said it was gathering information about whether Amazon uses merchant data in a way that harms the competition. Its power lies in its ability to impose fines, while Schaldemose's proposal, if accepted, would have a greater scope, since it would apply to all companies, regardless of their market power. 

In his amendment, Schaldemose referred to the investigations of antitrust regulators in the European Union and elsewhere about the dual role of online brokerage services as a market and as a rival on the same platform. 

"To ensure impartiality, the online brokerage service provider should not be allowed to disclose the data generated by a commercial user's transactions to third parties for commercial purposes, even within their own corporate structure, without the commercial user's consent, "The draft said. 

Lawmakers also want the rules to cover voice assistance services or virtual assistants such as Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri and the Google Assistant because of their growing popularity. 

After the committee vote, Schaldemose would seek approval in the assembly a week later. EU legislators would have to discuss a common position with the Commission and the EU countries before the proposals become law.
