Erdogan, from Turkey, threatens a new impulse against the Syrian Kurds
The president of Turkey said on Tuesday that his country has finalized plans for a "comprehensive and effective" operation that would target the Kurdish militia backed by the United States in Syria east of the Euphrates River, a move that could further increase the tension in the area where the coalition forces led by the United States are based.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan's comments came days after the Turkish military bombed Syrian The Protection Units of Kurdish Peoples, or YPG, occupy militia posts and follow repeated warnings to expand Ankara's operations to northeastern Syria.
Turkish forces have already forced the Kurdish Syrian forces from the western Euphrates into two cross-border operations in 2016 and 2018. Ankara considers the militia a terrorist threat and an extension of the Kurdish rebels waging an insurgency inside Turkey.
"Soon, we will descend on them with a more complete and effective force," said Erdogan, who has long vowed to eliminate the militia from northern Syria. He spoke with the legislators of the ruling party.
The official Anadolu news agency said Turkish artillery struck Kurdish trenches and hilltop positions on Sunday in the village of Zor Moghar in the northern province of Aleppo.
US support for the forces led by the Kurds to fight the militants of the Islamic State has been enraged Turkey. Washington and Ankara agreed during the summer to an agreement that would effectively push the Kurdish militia out of a key city in northern Syria, easing tension between the two NATO members.
Under the agreement, US and Turkish troops would patrol Manbij, which lies west of the Euphrates. Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said in comments made by Anadolu that the training has been completed and that the patrols will begin imminently. After Manbij, the "work point, field of Turkey" would be the region east of the Euphrates, he said.
It is not clear how a potential Turkish offensive east of the Euphrates would affect US troops operating with Kurdish fighters there.
