Dumbo Octopus discovered during a California deepwater mission stuns researchers
The researchers made an unexpected discovery during a deep dive off the coast of California last week: a translucent cephalopod known as the Dumbo octopus.
Scientists on board the E / V Nautilus - a 210-foot marine exploration vessel used for research - studied an "extinct volcano" named Davidson Seamount to see where corals and sponges are when they made the surprising discovery, said Chad King, the main scientist of the trip, to Fox News .
King saw the creature out of the corner of his eye when the team used his underwater vehicle Hercules to explore on Tuesday.
"Although I am a scientist, we are all children here," he admitted, adding the Dumbo octopus "exalted [everyone] in the control area. "
The Dumbo octopus slid and moved its fins in the water before "giving" the researchers a closer look at their body.
"Oh, he's giving us a show," a person was heard saying in captured images of the creature.
The creature was approximately 23 inches tall and was almost 10,870 feet deep, depending on the Ocean Exploration Trust, a non-profit organization that owns the Nautilus.
The "Dumbo elephants", of which there are approximately 17 species, receive their nickname because their fins are like the ears of the Disney Dumbo character, the Pacific Aquarium explains Most of the Dumbo octopus species are between 7.8 and 12 inches long, says the aquarium, although the largest Dumbo octopus ever measured was more than 6 feet.
The researchers found a Dumbo octopus on Tuesday.

King pointed out that Dumbo octopuses are not rare, but it is unusual to see them live.
"The fact that we meet one is what is special," he said, adding that the images could be useful for octopus experts.
Unfortunately, the exciting encounter had to be cut.

"We had to move because of the length of the cable and where the ship was," said King.
Even so, the researchers witnessed another incredible find in the same dive.
"We came across this incredible degeneration, or collection, of a different species of octopus, all the mothers hatching their eggs," he shared.
The current Nautilus expedition is scheduled to run until October 31.
