Destination, Asteroid: NASA's OSIRIS-REx Spacecraft Starts Final Approach

Even as a European lander He made an epic touchdown on an asteroid This week, NASA began its final maneuvers on Monday (October 1) to send its own spacecraft to a space rock.

From NASA OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security Regolith Explorer) The mission executed the first asteroid approach maneuver that day, putting the ship on its way to asteroid Bennu in December. NASA said in a statement. However, it will take at least until next week to see if the maneuver was successful, NASA said.

OSIRIS-REx performed a braking maneuver using its main engines. The procedure was designed to reduce the speed of the ship to 313 mph (140 meters / second), approximately one third of the ship's previous speed of 1,100 mph (491 m / s).

The burning of the engine marks the beginning of six weeks occupied for the ship as it completes a series of orbital adjustments that will ensure that it reaches its destination.

The last of these maneuvers, scheduled for November 12, will put OSIRIS-REx on its way to Bennu on December 3, at a distance of 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the surface of the asteroid. OSIRIS-REx will then make several overflights on the poles and the equator of Bennu. The ultimate goal of the mission is to collect a sample of the asteroid to return to Earth in 2023.

Meanwhile, the Hayabusa2 The sample and return ship successfully launched the MASCOT (Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout) lander, a joint project of the German and French space agencies, on the surface of the Ryugu asteroid on October 2. There, the lander completed a 17-hour work session. Hayabusa2 will perform multiple measurements of the surface before returning to Earth with the precious material in 2020.

Scientists are interested in discovering more about the origins of asteroids to learn on the history of the solar system. These space rocks represent what the solar system used to be, before moons and planets formed from rocks and gas that were joined by gravitational forces.

There is a second, less benign reason to be interested in asteroids: some of these space rocks, including Ryugu and Bennu, sometimes cross Earth's orbit. And scientists would like to be able to better assess how to protect the planet against an asteroid impact that is unlikely but possible. NASA tracks many thousands of asteroidsthrough its program of Near Earth Objects; No imminent threat to Earth has yet been found.
