		The last of these maneuvers, scheduled for November 12, will put OSIRIS-REx on its way to Bennu on December 3, at a distance of 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the surface of the asteroid. OSIRIS-REx will then make several overflights on the poles and the equator of Bennu. The ultimate goal of the mission is to collect a sample of the asteroid to return to Earth in 2023.

	There is a second, less benign reason to be interested in asteroids: some of these space rocks, including Ryugu and Bennu, sometimes cross Earth's orbit.
