Dabeinong, from China, reports on a suspected case of African swine fever in a related farm: media

BEIJING (Reuters) - One of China's leading animal feed producers said on Tuesday that an affiliated company has slaughtered nearly 20,000 pigs due to a suspected case of African swine fever, according to a China Securities Journal report.

On Tuesday, Dabeinong Technology Group Co Ltd reported the information to investors on an online platform, the state publication reported. The company could not be contacted for a Reuters comment.

China has reported more than 30 separate outbreaks of the deadly disease in nine provinces and municipalities since the first case in early August and has slaughtered tens of thousands of animals.

Dabeinong has expanded from food production to pig farming in recent years, building large sow farms to supply the world's largest pork market. It was the 15th largest producer in China in 2017, according to data from the China Swine Industry Association.

Like many other companies, it has bought or invested in other pig breeding companies in an attempt to grow more quickly and fill the gap left by the departure of small farmers.

According to the report of the Securities Daily, it has a 40 percent stake in two pig breeding companies in the northeastern province of Liaoning, including one in the city of Beizhen, under the administration of the city of Jinzhou, where the suspicious case.

China's Ministry of Agriculture reported late on Monday a new outbreak of African swine fever on a farm with 19,938 pigs in Jinzhou city. He did not identify the farm, but said that 221 pigs had died from the disease and that local authorities had slaughtered all the animals in accordance with the regulations.

It was the largest farm to date to report a case of highly contagious disease, which analysts said underscored the growing severity of the outbreak.

"The recent outbreak will surely have a negative impact on the corporate and farmers' model," said Feng Yonghui, an analyst at industry consultancy Soozhu.com, referring to the use by companies of hired farmers and affiliated farms to boost their production.

"It is not the best model in the industry in terms of food security and biosecurity," he added, and wholly owned farms tend to be better supervised and are likely to have better measures to protect themselves against the spread of the disease.

Dabeinong produced 640,000 pigs for slaughter in 2017, according to its financial report. He did not disclose numbers for farms that are not mostly owned by the company.

In August, he warned that a large part of his new pig breeding capacity was inactive, increasing production costs and driving the company to its first quarterly loss in years.

Shares of Dabeinong fell almost 3 percent on Tuesday and are trading at their lowest levels in six years.

Shares of other major producers, including Muyuan Foods and Wen's Foodstuff Group Ltd, also fell more than 2 percent.

Shares of Jiangxi Zhengbang Technology Co Ltd, China's fourth largest pig producer, fell 8.5 percent. The company said in a statement that its breeding farms were operating normally and none had been affected by swine fever.

China also reported three new cases of the disease in Liaoning province on Tuesday, including two in the city of Panjin and one in the city of Tieling.
