Crew of Failed Soyuz Rocket Will Fly Again Next Spring, Russia's Space Chief Says

One day after a The Soyuz rocket failed just after takeoffBy sending his crew of two men to a dramatic abortion in the middle of the flight, the head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos said that Americans and Russians aboard the flight will fly again next year.

Dmitry Rogozin, head of Roscosmos, said through Twitter on Friday (October 12) Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin and NASA astronaut Nick Hague will fly again in the spring, according to one translation. The statement suggests Rogozin has great confidence that an investigation into the failure of the Soyuz launch will quickly find a root cause. NASA's own administrator, Jim Bridenstine, was also optimistic in a quick resolution.

"I fully anticipate that NASA astronauts will fly again on the Soyuz spacecraft." Bridenstine said via Twitter on Sunday (October 14) after a press conference in Moscow.

A Soyuz rocket carrying Haya and Ovchinin was launched into the sky from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Thursday (October 11) on a mission to the International Space Station, where the two space travelers would join three other members of the International Space Station. crew that already lived aboard the laboratory in orbit. But about 119 seconds after takeoff, something went wrong.

The crew's Soyuz capsule cancellation system MS-10 unfolded, ripped the space capsule off its impeller and pulled Haya and Ovchinin to safety. After subjecting the crew to G forces of up to 6.7 times the force of gravity, the capsule landed safely under its parachute, with search and rescue teams that quickly recovered the crew. An investigation into the failure of the Soyuz rocket is under way, with an initial focus on the four belt reinforcements that were used at the beginning of the flight.

The famous cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev, director of human space flights for Roscosmos, told reporters on Friday that it seems that one of those reinforcements did not separate cleanly, cutting the first stage of the Soyuz core. according to SpaceNews.

Hague and Ovchinin are in good health and reunited with their families in Star City, Russia, where Roscosmos trains cosmonauts and astronauts for space flight, according to Rogozin. The photos of the men show that they underwent medical check-ups, hugging family members after an emotional meeting and talking to officials from NASA and Roscosmos.

Roscosmos officials said on Saturday (October 13) that telemetry data and video recordings were sent to the Soyuz manufacturer RSC Energia for review. The recovery teams have also recovered debris from each stage of the Soyuz rocket from the remote Kazakh steppes around the Baikonur cosmodrome so they can be studied in more detail. Those components of the rocket must also be delivered on Sunday (October 14).

Krikalev told reporters on Friday that Roscosmos officials intend to have an update on the Soyuz abortion investigation for this Saturday (October 20).

The Soyuz spacecraft with Russian crew are currently the only vehicles available to fly NASA astronauts to and from the International Space Station. NASA has contracts with two US private companies, SpaceX and Boeing, to take Americans into space in a commercial spacecraft, but those new vehicles are not expected to begin test flights until next year, officials said.
