Computer simulation would help explore gold and silver deposits
Lorena Paola Cárdenas Espinosa, Magister in Geophysical Sciences of the National University of Colombia (UN), affirms that "the objective is to estimate if what is going to be done will obtain good results, or if it is definitely not feasible to do the study "
The designed tool was tested in the simulation of a hypothetical model of La Cantera, a deposit belonging to the La Mina copper-gold project, located between the municipalities of Fredonia and Venecia (Antioquia), with results comparable to those reported by the company. after electromagnetic studies carried out on the project.
Although minerals of high economic value such as gold, silver and bronze have the particularity of not having an electromagnetic response, they are usually found in sulphide deposits that do possess it, so mining exploration to find them in the subsoil is usually done through electromagnetic methods that detect the anomalies generated by the contrast between these deposits and their environment.
From a Comsol Multiphysics computational tool, the researcher managed to introduce Maxwell's equations, from the fundamental theory of electromagnetism, on which the studied electromagnetic methods are based, in addition to the specific parameters of the deposits.

She explains that "the computer solves the equations, divides the problem into small fragments (finite elements), compiles everything and estimates the general response of the system".
According to the master, several electromagnetic methods were included considering variables such as the presence of natural currents in the subsoil (telluric), possibly produced by the rays, and the induction of electromagnetic fields and how these can affect the results obtained.
He mentions that "generally in the subsoil there are natural currents that can be produced by the rays or by the chemical interaction between the molecules of this, which is what helps us to measure the electromagnetic responses".
These studies provide information on the characteristics of the reservoir - such as geometry and approximate dimensions - as well as the electrical and magnetic properties of bodies in the subsoil.
Among the main mineral deposits that are explored with this methodology are sulfides, due to their high contrast in magnetic and electrical properties such as magnetic susceptibility, polarization and electrical conductivity, so they were chosen to test the simulation tool. (Source: UN / DICYT)
