China finds the first cases of African swine fever in the south of the country

BEIJING (Reuters) - The three-month outbreak of African swine fever in China has spread to the south of the country for the first time, its main pork-eating region, after authorities reported two cases in southwestern China on Sunday. Yunnan

The news comes when China enters its peak period of pig production before the country's most important festival, the New Year holiday, which will be held in early February 2019.

"What worries us most now has happened," said Feng Yonghui, chief analyst at industry portal Soozhu.com, referring to the spread of the disease from the northeast to the southwest.

China has reported more than 40 outbreaks of the highly contagious disease in 11 provinces and municipalities, and approximately 200,000 pigs have been slaughtered. All the outbreaks had been in the northern and eastern provinces until the first case in Yunnan.

The latest outbreaks, reported for the first time by official CCTV, were on two small farms in Zhaotong, a city in the northeast of Yunnan province.

Zhaotong is nearly 3,000 km (1,865 miles) from Shenyang, where the first outbreak was reported in early August, but many northern producers transport pigs over long distances to meet demand in the south.

A total of 545 pigs had already died in the two farms when the disease was confirmed. About 7,000 pigs in the 3 km area around the farms will be slaughtered by noon on Monday, state media website Yunnan Daily said on Monday.

The Ministry of Agriculture warned on Friday that prices of pigs will rise before the New Year holidays, as outbreaks of African swine fever affected supply.

The new cases in the southwest could have a big impact, Feng warned, since people in the region are among the main consumers of pork in the country.

"In the southwest, everyone eats pork, no matter what their income level is," he said.

"Pig prices are likely to increase, as consumption will remain high, but the ban on transporting pigs from neighboring provinces will probably reduce supplies."
