Cheops in Maxwell's camera

ESA's Cheops satellite for the characterization of exoplanets is being prepared for electromagnetic compatibility tests within the Maxwell chamber of ESTEC, the technological heart of the Agency in Noordwijk (The Netherlands).

Once the main door of the chamber is sealed, the 12 m metal walls of the Maxwell test chamber form a Faraday cage and block the electromagnetic signals from the outside. The pyramids of anechoic foam that cover their interior absorb the internal signals, in addition to the sound, to prevent any reflection, as it would happen in the infinite void of space.

After activation, a bidirectional radio beam was directed towards Cheops. The satellite was then rotated and tilted at different angles to detect any harmful electromagnetic "crosstalk" that might occur between its subsystems. The tests also ruled out any radio emission from the satellite that could interfere with its launcher during the launch into orbit.

ESA's Cheops satellite will measure the size of known exoplanets by detecting small fluctuations in the light of their progenitor stars. Cheops, an acronym for "CHAracterising ExOPlanet Satellite", combines the most advanced scientific performance with a compact design: its size is 1.5 x 1.4 x 1.5 m and, loaded with fuel, it weighs about 300 kg. This makes it possible to travel as a second passenger aboard a Soyuz rocket inside its ASAP-S adapter.

Last month, once the ESTEC test campaign was completed, Cheops changed ESTEC through the Airbus Defense & Space facilities in Madrid to undergo further evaluations, including testing of its solar panels, a "leak test" of its module of propulsion and a status check with its launch adapter.

Once all the tests are done, the satellite is scheduled to launch next year from the European Spaceport in French Guiana. (Source: ESA)
