Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas to Texans
Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas to Texans
The exchange of Demaryius Thomas from the Denver Broncos to the Houston Texans was not so much a goodbye as a "see you later".
As on Sunday, when the Texans (5-3) visit the Broncos (3-5).
"I thought so, yes," general manager John Elway said on Tuesday. "But, ultimately, we had to look beyond that and (we) thought it would not affect our game."
Then, Elway sent his big wide receiver to the Texans for a 2019 fourth-round pick. The clubs also traded the seventh-round pick in next year's draft.
Thomas, a ninth-year veteran who was first or second in most of Denver's receiving records, has 36 receptions for 402 yards this season.
Despite averaging 11.2 yards per catch in his career, Thomas' three touchdowns were tied with Emmanuel Sanders for the team lead and they gave him 66 for his career, including the playoffs.
"We were not bent on swapping Demaryius," said Elway, explaining that he was convinced to make the play for the selection pack and the rise of rookies Courtland Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton along with second-year player Tim Patrick, who caught his first TD career pass last week.
"It's never easy when you exchange a guy who has been a household name around here for a long time and has done a lot of great things, not only in the field but also in the community, and he's a good man," said Elway.
"Besides, it's a good place for Demaryius, he's going to a good team that is in a pennant race, so it will be good for him too."
The Texans from the south of the AFC, who beat "another three or four teams" for Thomas's services, according to Elway, met with a big receiver when they lost Will Fuller for the season in a knee ligament last week. . He had trouble keeping rookie Keke Coutee (hamstrings) in the field.
On Tuesday, in a conference call with the Denver media, Texans coach Bill O'Brien said he has followed Thomas since the 6-foot-3, 230-pound catcher was at Georgia Tech before the Broncos they will select it in the first round in 2010.
"He has excellent athletic skills, excellent hands, a very smooth road runner," O'Brien said. "He's a difficult guy to defend."
And now it's the Broncos who will have to defend it.
Thomas has a salary cap of $ 15.53 million for 2019, the last year of his deal, and with the appearance of Sutton as a threat of big plays, Elway felt it was time to get something for Thomas, who probably would not return next season anyway.
Sutton is a younger and raw version of Thomas, a thick receiver who is an expert in shooting 50 to 50 passes and who will now start alongside Sanders.
"I hope this will accelerate his maturity," Elway said of Sutton, a second-round pick from SMU.
Elway said that this is not evidence that the Broncos, losers of five out of six, are giving up on the season, either.
"When you lose a guy like Demaryius, we're going to lose a little bit, but I think what we can do is get young people and young people back, and gain experience this year," Elway said.
Elway said it was difficult to call Thomas to his office to change it.
"It's an end for him and for us, but as I told him, he will always be a Bronco," said Elway. "He finishes his career here, but not his NFL career, and he knows that, in the end, the Broncos will meet with Demaryius."
So he can be included in the team's Ring of Fame.
Josh McDaniels' first draft selection, Thomas has accumulated 66 touchdown passes in 135 games, counting the playoffs. He has served as captain and was a permanent and consistent receiver for quarterbacks Tim Tebow, Kyle Orton, Peyton Manning, Brock Osweiler, Trevor Siemian and, this year, Case Keenum.
Thomas's 36-yard, 100-yard games are the most in Broncos history and his 60 regular-season touchdowns, and 9,055 yards are surpassed only by Rod Smith.
A five-time Pro Bowler, Thomas's career is an outstanding roll.
He caught Manning's 509th and 510th touchdown shots that tied and broke Brett Favre's historic record in 2014, and appeared in two Super Bowls with Manning, setting a Super Bowl record with 13 receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown against Seattle.
Two years later, he won a championship in Super Bowl 50 with the assistance of his mother. She had just been released from a federal penitentiary after the then president. Barack Obama She commuted her drug sentence that had taken her away from her son when he was a teenager.
For many, Thomas's best moment was his 80-yard touchdown catch from Tebow on the first overtime play that gave Denver an impressive 29-23 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in a wild-card playoff game from the AFC on January 8, 2012.
"He made so many great plays," Elway said. "Obviously, the one from Pittsburgh is the one that stands out the most we all remember, but he's a guy who was very productive and consistent for a long time and he was also healthy most of the time, then, a guy we could trust."
And one will see again very soon.
