Bradley slam helps the Red Sox beat Astros 8-2 in ALCS
Jackie Bradley Jr. did not let his behavior change this season, even when fans begged Boston to trade him during a miserable fall in the first half.
He also remained stable after the biggest change in his career.
Bradley won a grand slam for his second major success in the American League Championship Series, helping the Red Sox beat the Houston Astros 8-2 on Tuesday by a 2-1 lead in the series. His discreet personality was on display while rounded the bases without the touch of a smile. He greeted his teammates screaming and excited on the home plate with a small jump and a few shocked.
"One of my coaches in the past ... said, 'Nobody should know if you're winning or losing, keep the same temper, that way, it will allow you to put some perspective on things,'" Bradley said. "And I took it very seriously."
The blow of Bradley supported a solid beginning of Nathan Eovaldi, who silenced to Houston a day after a conversation of Alex Bregman in the social networks.
"We can play in any park," said Eovaldi. "The first game is always the biggest of all the series when you go on tour."
Game 4 is Wednesday night, with Rick Porcello of Boston opposing Charlie Morton.
Steve Pearce hit a tiebreaker for the Red Sox against Joe Smith in the sixth, a drive that sailed just inside the foul pole in left field for a 3-2 lead.
The blow of Bradley culminated a burst of five races in the eighth inning against Roberto Osuna. The Astros got two outs, but allowed two singles and pulled consecutive hitters to force a run. Bradley then crushed a 1-1 fastball in the seats on the right to send Houston fans running to the exits.
"That's the playground with which I always take it," said Osuna. "He hit him today, but I would go there 100 times more."
Osuna was acquired from Toronto this season while serving a 75-game ban under Major League BaseballThe domestic violence policy. He had a 1.99 ERA in 23 games for Houston in the regular season after he returned.
With his childhood hero and his partner Alvin, Texas, the native Nolan Ryan sitting behind the plate, Eovaldi had another solid start. He allowed six hits and two runs with four strikeouts in six innings for victory in the second playoff start of his career.
"For him, I know he's special," said Boston manager Alex Cora.
Bregman had shared a video Monday on Instagram of Houston playing consecutive home runs against Eovaldi in his previous outing against the Astros in June. Eovaldi downplayed the publication when asked about it on Monday.
Bregman did much of the damage against Eovaldi, getting two hits, one RBI and a walk in three plate appearances. Bregman has safely reached the base in 20 of the 28 plate appearances this postseason.
"Eovaldi did a great job," Bregman said. "He really had five pitches working for him, it's tough, we knew that was going into the game."
Bradley hit a three-run double during the Boston Game 2 victory, giving him three RBIs in consecutive games for the first time in his career. Moments after his coup, fans of TD Garden in Boston began to sing "¡JBJ!" during the first game of the Celtics' season against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Bradley had caught the ire of many Red Sox fans when they hit .210 during the first half of the season.
"It's a credit to him, because at this level, when you reach .180 after two months or I think it was three months, it's difficult," Cora said. "And he kept showing up, he kept working, he kept working his trade, now you see the results."
Boston jumped on Dallas Keuchel for two runs in the first, but the Astros cut the lead to 2-1 at the bottom of the inning and tied it up in a double Bregman producer in the fifth.
The Astros won 1 of 8 with runners in scoring position in the first home game of the series, which was played in front of a total crowd of 43.102 and included the Astros Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell and the Houston Rockets stars James Harden, Chris Paul and Carmelo Antonio. Bregman's double was the only extra-base hit for a team that entered the game having hit at least one homer in a record of 14 consecutive playoff games.
Jose Altuve, on the designated hitter on Tuesday due to a knee injury, walked with two outs in the fifth and scored from the first in the double by Bregman, who jumped to third baseman Rafael Devers and entered the corner of left field to tie at 2 -2. Altuve also got a single in the seventh.
Eduardo Núñez started at third base for Boston after Cora placed him on the bench in favor of Devers in Game 2. Devers took over the third position at the end of the fourth, after hitting Núñez at the top of the entrance.
What catch
Pearce almost threw an extra base hit with two in the third, but left fielder Tony Kemp of 5 feet and 6 feet jumped against the wall and came up with the towering Pearce tower.
"That's a completely different entry if that ball hits one more foot or if Tony can not get up on the wall and make that catch," Houston manager AJ Hinch said.
The replays showed that the ball could have hit the wall just before falling into Kemp's glove, but the referees confirmed the decision when Boston challenged.
"It hit the wall, but it was actually in my glove at the time," Kemp said.
UNTIL NEXT TIME
Morton will make his postseason debut in 2018. Morton, who spent time on the disabled list at the end of the season with shoulder discomfort, has not pitched since the end of the Houston regular season on Sept. 30. Porcello was scheduled to start on Tuesday, but a game was rejected after releasing his relief relay in Game 2.
