Bolsonaro of Brazil denies ties with strategist Steve Bannon
The far-right presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro said on Thursday that his campaign has no ties to the former White House The strategist Steve Bannon, contradicting the affirmations of one of the sons of Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro, who won the first round of Brazilpresidential choice On Sunday and is the favorite in the polls for the second round on October 28, he was asked about connections to Bannon during an event in Rio de Janeiro.
Bolsonaro said that if his son Eduardo Bolsonaro had met with Bannon, "he did not tell me."
"We do not have the resources to pay for the campaign ... even if (a marketing strategist) approached us," Bolsonaro said.
He described the connection reports with Bannon as "typical fake news".
In August, the Brazilian magazine Epoca quoted Eduardo Bolsonaro as saying that Bannon "had placed himself at our disposal to help."
In the interview, Bolsonaro said that the aid would not be financial, but "internet advice, sometimes an analysis, interpretation of data, that kind of thing".
Also in August, Eduardo posted on Instagram a photo of himself with Bannon. The legend said that the two had met and that Bannon was an "enthusiast" of his father's candidacy and that "they would unite against cultural Marxism."
Eduardo Bolsonaro has not responded to several attempts to obtain comments. Bannon has not responded to requests for comment either.
Bolsonaro, a former army captain who speaks with approval of Brazil's 1964-1985 dictatorship, will face former Sao Paulo mayor Fernando Haddad of the left-wing Workers' Party in the second round.
Bolsonaro has pledged to reduce government spending, privatize many state-owned enterprises and crack down on drug dealers and other criminals. Many have compared Bolsonaro to Trump because of his brazen way of speaking and some common ground in politics.
In the same event on Thursday, Bolsonaro said he "admired Trump" when it came to his tough position in immigration.
"We can not have a country with open borders," Bolsonaro said.
