Boeing rocket for NASA on budget, could further delay the launch: audit

ORLANDO, Fla. (Reuters) - Boeing Co is building the largest rocket in NASA's history, but the aerospace giant's "poor performance" has resulted in a $ 8.9 billion price tag that is double the initial budget and could further delay the launch, the US space UU The agency's watch office said Wednesday.

The first test launch of the Space Launch System rocket, which is supposed to send humans to the Moon and ultimately allow exploration of deep space, was scheduled for mid-2020, with a launch of the crew in 2022. The launches were delayed at least three times

The Inspector General of NASA said in an audit that "the management, technical and infrastructure problems driven by Boeing's low performance" had caused delays and cost overruns, which raised doubts about the future launch schedule. The delivery of the first central phase of the program has already been delayed two and a half years until December 2019, according to the report.

NASA spokeswoman Kathryn Hambleton said the agency was restructuring its contract with Boeing, but was still planning the same schedule.

"The agency is still planning the launch of Exploration Mission-1 in 2020, but there are still technical and scheduled risks," he said in an email.

Boeing spokeswoman Patricia Soloveichik said in an email that the audit did not accurately describe the current status of the program and that the company had already implemented some of the regulator's recommendations. He also blamed the "internal affairs of NASA."

Boeing, which was selected as the prime contractor for the NASA program in 2012, has faced delays with other federal contracts.

The company has not met several deadlines to deliver its KC-46 air cargo tank to the US Air Force. UU It has accumulated approximately $ 3 billion in costs for the program, a derivative of its 767 commercial aircraft, and is more than two years behind schedule.

In the case of the NASA program, Boeing will exhaust the total budget of $ 6.2 billion of the contract three years before its completion and finally spend $ 8.9 billion until 2021 without delivering the main stage of the rocket or its upper stage, according to the report. The audit blamed the lack of personnel and inadequate assembly of the factory tools for delays.

The largest figure is twice the initial budget of the contract.
