Do you remember the big and good media conferences that Republicans and Conservatives had to reject Senate candidate Roy Moore in Alabama last year to retain some sense of principle and self-respect? The sound you do not hear this year is any comparable editorial that Democrats and liberals should reject Bob Menéndez in New Jersey.

Republican voters make mistakes, and Alabama's conservatives did so by appointing Judge Moore, who was credibly accused of courting minors as a young prosecutor. But most national conservatives urged their defeat because it was the right thing to do. Enough Republicans stayed at home on election day to give the seat to Democrat Doug Jones in a narrowly divided Senate. Mr. Jones proceeded to vote with his party and opposed the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh before the Supreme Court.

Now look at New Jersey, where the left is silent or is urging voters to re-elect Mr. Menéndez despite his severe Senate warning of corruption. Apparently, it's their kind of corrupt, that is, it's a vote more towards a Democratic majority in the Senate. "Turn it off and vote for Menendez," proclaimed an endorsement on Sunday at the Newark Star-Ledger.

The rawness of the prose reflects the rawness of the argument. "It is a miracle that Menéndez has escaped a criminal conviction, and an act of profound narcissism that he kept in the race despite this baggage, putting at risk a Democratic seat while Donald Trump sits in the White House," says the liberal newspaper. But nonetheless, he urges voters to re-elect the senator of poor quality because Republican challenger Bob Hugin used to work for a profit-making biotechnology company.

Mr. Hugin is losing Mr. Menéndez by only five or six points, and the national democrats are investing millions in the state to save his man. High-ranking Democrats can show that they are a moral match for Alabama Republicans if they decide to vote for Mr. Hugin or stay at home. Otherwise, save us the lectures on the moral consequences of Donald Trump.
