Blazers spoil James & # 039; Debutan with 128-119 victory over the Lakers.
LeBron James' debut for the Los Angeles Lakers opened with two thunderous scrolls and closed with a loss.
He finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds, but the Portland Trail Blazers prevailed on Thursday night 128-119 in the opening of the season for both teams.
James insisted that the new image of the Lakers was going to be a work in progress.
"It's not instant oatmeal, it's not that fast," James said. "It takes some time to get that chemistry where you can close your eyes and know exactly where the guys are."
Damian Lillard had 28 points and Nik Stauskas came off the bench to score 24 points for Portland, which won its 18th consecutive game at home to extend an NBA record. It was the 16th consecutive victory for the Blazers over the Lakers.
The opening festivities were moderated by the death this week of Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen. To "Rip City" baseball the cover rested on Allen's seat with a single rose.
The enigmatic co-founder of Microsoft died Monday in Seattle from complications of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was 65 years old. There was a moment of silence before the game and tributes to Allen throughout the night.
On the court, the focus was on James. His overturned monsters began to surprise the Moda Center crowd as Nike co-founder Phil Knight watched from the seats on the court.
James signed a four-year, $ 153 million contract with the Lakers as a free agent in the offseason, after winning three NBA championship rings and taking his team, Miami and Cleveland, to the NBA Finals in each one of the last eight seasons.
The four-time MVP of the league joined a renewed group that includes veterans Rajon Rondo, JaVale McGee, Lance Stephenson and Michael Beasley, as well as a young core of Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart and the rookie Moe Wagner.
While the Lakers made big changes in the offseason, the Trail Blazers returned the five starters of a team that finished third in the Western Conference last season, including Lillard's core, CJ McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic.
"We wanted to go out and start the season well and honor our owner, Mr. Paul Allen, that's what it's about tonight, not the noise that surrounds the game," Lillard said.
James' setback gave Los Angeles a 25-15 lead. He played just under nine minutes in the first quarter and led all the scorers with 13 points.
Portland went ahead 46-40 with triple Stauskas. Stauskas, who signed with the Blazers as a free agent last summer, led all the Blazers with 16 points in the first half. Portland increased the lead to 11, but led only 65-63 at halftime.
"He really got impatient and the guy can shoot, we've seen him in practice," coach Terry Stotts said of Stauskas. "I was really happy that the season started with a new team, the shots he did were all in the flow of the offense."
James scored 18 points, but accumulated a third foul with 6:04 to play in the middle.
Kuzma's dunk got the Lakers into 79-78 with only four minutes left in the third quarter. Hart's triple, the first of the Lakers in the game, put Los Angeles ahead 85-83. The lead was short-lived, but Portland had a 93-91 lead in the last quarter.
Stauskas hit a 3-pointer that put Portland up 107-100 with 7:22 to play. After he fell, he turned to the crowd and hit his chest. McCollum's triple with 5:01 left put Portland 114-104.
Caldwell-Pope's triple with 30.7 seconds remaining left the Lakers between 124-118, but Stauskas made a pair of free throws and Los Angeles could not reach them.
TIP INS
Lakers: Lakers head coach Luke Walton said that Ball would continue with a playtime restriction after having a low season procedure on his knee. Bola played 20 minutes and scored seven points. ... Hart had 20 points from the bench. ... Los Angeles made 7 of 30 3-point attempts.
Trail Blazers: with Maurice Harkless dealing with a knee injury that bothered him in the preseason, Stotts started Jake Layman. ... McCollum finished with 21 points.
Homage to allen
On the edge of the Blazers' court, PGA was painted with a rose, and the Blazers had similar patches on their shirts to honor Allen. Stotts spoke before the game about all the people Allen had played. "Everyone talks about their philanthropy over the years, and what they have done, when people started writing about it, listing all the things and all their achievements and the impact on millions and millions of people, and the environment, the earth and everything. " It is difficult to put in context, the magnitude, "said the coach.
ALL THE EYES IN US
When James joins the team, the Lakers are grappling with more scrutiny with a large contingent of media on hand for their debut.
"We've talked about it, not to make it a distraction, we're not going to let it influence what we're trying to do on this team," Walton said. "In fact, we are trying to use it as something to grow a bond in our group, our theme is to really believe in the idea that it's only us, those of us who are working here, those who improve." "
UNTIL NEXT TIME
James will make his home debut in the Lakers against the Houston Rockets on Saturday.
The Blazers host the Spurs on Saturday.
