The goal of eliminating extreme poverty is among the top priorities of the global community and is the first of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN. But, according to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, progress towards poverty reduction is threatened by the presence of too many poor people, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

Some world leaders have drawn criticism for their paternalistic comments on African fertility, including French President Emmanuel Macron.

At a launch event for the Gates Foundation's Goalkeepers Report, held in conjunction with the UN General Assembly, Macron said that Africa's high birth rate "is not the chosen fertility" and reflects a lack of education.

"I always say: 'Introduce me to the woman who decided, being perfectly educated, to have seven, eight or nine children.'"

Here is an idea: If you want African families to stop having "seven, eight, nine children", why not invest some of those donations in EDUCATION, instead of depopulation?

Did you know that At least 500,000 young Kenyan girls and women have been sterilized after a tetanus shot. administered by the government and driven by international organizations in the pocket of Bill Gates?

Did you know that In India, more than 47,000 cases of paralysis. among children were reported in 2011, after the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation vaccination program?

Due to the history of the population's coercive control programs, "the population was completely eliminated from the vocabulary of development," writes Alex Ezeh in the Goalkeepers Report. "For the sake of Africa's future, we should get it back."

The report argues that the decline of the extremely poor in the world could be hampered by the growth of the population in Africa.

In addition, the report notes that due to the increase in the African population, the number of extremely poor people could begin to increase given that more than 40 percent of the world's extremely poor live in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Nigeria.

One of the problems in the analysis of poverty and population is the distinction between gross numbers and percentages. Take Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa; The Gates report projects that the number of people in extreme poverty will increase from 81 million to 152 million by 2050.

At the same time, however, they anticipate that the percentage of Nigeria's population living in extreme poverty will decrease from 43% to 35% in the same period. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, extreme poverty is projected to fall from 67% to 41%.

In other words, as the population grows in both countries, the relative proportion of people in extreme poverty is shrinking, not growing.

Melinda Gates has defended international family planning for a long time, and the Goalkeepers Report highlights it as one of the four priority areas, along with HIV, agriculture and education. One of the objectives of the SDGs is to guarantee universal access to sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning.

But when it comes to measuring access, the UN relies on more adequate metrics to measure usage, or the concept of "unmet need", of which the lack of access to services represents only 5%.

Sub-Saharan Africa is still notable for its high real fertility and high desired fertility. While advocates of family planning, including Melinda Gates, often talk about the need to increase access to contraceptives, their real goal is to increase use and promote a rule for small families.

But the growing shadow of past abuses is still great, despite the efforts of the Gates Foundation and others to return the demographic logic to family planning, in addition to the rhetoric about human rights and choice.

Melinda Gates told the Washington Post that she is frustrated with the Trump administration's decision to cut funding for "international reproductive rights projects," calling it "incredibly disappointing."

While in the past Gates has notably highlighted her advocacy of family planning for the global advocacy on abortion, she co-chaired a Gender Equality Council at the G7 earlier this year, which solicited public funds for abortion, abortion as a component of humanitarian assistance and the withdrawal of the expanded policy of the Trump administration in Mexico City that blocks the financing of aid to international abortion groups.
