The singer's voice shot up as she performed three ballads, including her 2009 hit "Halo" and "Ava Maria," after greeting the character of Warner / Chappell Music Publishing CEO Jon Platt at the City of Hope gala , near Los Angeles, Thursday night. Pharrell Williams hosted the star-studded event that included Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre, Tiffany Haddish, Usher, Timbaland, Derek Fisher and Rita Ora.
Mary Mary made some of her hits, including "Shackles (Praise You)" and "God in Me." The jazz player Trombone Shorty also provided a musical ensemble.
Haddish introduced the cancer survivor, Kommah McDowell, who said he had a 5 percent chance of surviving triple-negative inflammatory breast cancer. She told her story of how to overcome the disease 13 years ago.
"It's great that everyone takes the time of their crazy schedules to do something good," singer Bebe Rexha said.
