By Roger D. Launius

In "The Smithsonian's history of space exploration: from the ancient world to the extraterrestrial future," space flight historian Roger D. Launius follows the journey of humanity towards space flight.
From looking at the stars with amazement by sending astronauts to the moon and launching satellites to the ends of the galaxy, Launius illustrates the cutting-edge advances made in astronomy and space science. His account of the history of space flight reminds readers that almost everything that humans have imagined, they have achieved. ~ Samantha Mathewson
By Brad Meltzer, illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos
"I'm Neil Armstrong" by Brad Meltzer.

"I Am Neil Armstrong", a new children's book by the successful author and presenter of History Channel Brad Meltzer, shows the children how they never gave up and that Neil Armstrong reached the Moon. Meltzer artistically captures Armstrong's journey from childhood to his historic first steps on the lunar surface. But Meltzer does not just focus on those famous steps. The story begins decades before the Apollo 11 mission with a very young Armstrong trying to climb to the top of a silver maple. After falling and recovering, Armstrong continued this pattern of determination throughout his career. Armstrong's inspirational story is masterfully executed in this colorful and enchanting biography. ~ Chelsea Gohd
"Catching Stardust" (Bloomsbury Sigma, 2018) by Natalie Starkey
Credit: Bloomsbury Sigma
In her debut book "Catching Stardust," space scientist Natalie Starkey analyzes the misconceptions about comets and asteroids while delving into some of the reasons why it is so vital that we study them. Using the Rosetta and Stardust missions to frame how and why we study these cosmic objects, Starkey reflects on the history of our human understanding of comets and asteroids.
Starkey begins with earlier civilizations, which often interpreted comets as burning omens in the sky, and leads to the present, where there is a constantly evolving line between what constitutes a comet and an asteroid. Nor does it escape the controversial issues: it addresses the issues of asteroid mining and the collision of asteroids with reality, openness and ease. And, while some of the terms and scientific concepts in the book may seem intimidating at first, Starkey does expert work that presents explanations in a way that is uniquely accessible. ~ Chelsea Gohd

'Chasing New Horizons' (Picador, 2018)
By Alan Stern and David Grinspoon
"Chasing New Horizons" (Picador, 2018) by Alan Stern and David Grinspoon.

This book describing the New Horizons to Pluto mission, written by Alan Stern, the principal investigator of the mission, and the astrobiologist and author David Grinspoon, is a deep, but rapid, immersion in the development and execution of the Lightweight probe Pluto flew in July. 2015. The mission was not easy to approve and seemed to face obstacles at every step before the launch day finally arrived, and their problems were not over at that time. But, somehow, it managed to offer impressive views of the distant dwarf planet that revolutionized our way of thinking about the solar system and the planets that inhabit it. The narrative of Stern and Grinspoon offers a detailed vision of how to design a space mission, guide it through the obstacles of approval and design, and send it into the unknown when you only have one chance to do it right. ~ Sarah Lewin

'Before Mars' (Ace, 2018)
By Emma Newman
"Before Mars" (Ace, 2018) by Emma Newman
Credit: Ace
The latest book by Emma Newman set in her universe "Planetfall", "Before Mars", sees a geologist who arrives at a small base on Mars after a long trip only to realize that things are not what they seem. The artificial intelligence of the base is not reliable, the psychologist seems sinister, and the main characters find a note for themselves that has no writing memory. In a perfectly immersive virtual reality world, can you trust what you see? Or did the long trip make a dent in his mental health? "Before Mars" takes place in a mysterious and largely empty Mars after a giant corporation buys rights over the planet.
It's an exciting read but, like other "Planetfall" books by Newman, it's also a deep immersion in the psychology of the protagonist as she deals with what she discovers on the Red Planet. "Before Mars" and the other books in the same universe ("Fall of the planet"Y"After the atlas") can be read in any order, but Space.com strongly recommends that you take a look at all of them. ~ Sarah Lewin
