BepiColombo takes off in search of Einstein

October 20, BepiColombo took off from Kourou on a five-year trip to Mercury. BepiColombo is a joint mission between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Agency (JAXA), which aim to study the smallest and least studied planet of the inner solar system. The mission consists of two scientific orbiters, which will be taken to Mercury through a transfer module, taking advantage of the electric solar propulsion and the overflights of gravitational assistance to place them in orbits around Mercury in 2025. BepiColombo will need to withstand the temperatures of a Pizza oven (up to 450 ° C / 840 ° F), in addition to fighting the enormous gravitational pull of the Sun in order to successfully orbit the neighbor more close to the Sun

The mission Delivery courier NASA was the last spacecraft that ventured so close to the Sun, and while many questions were answered with 4 years of observations, many more were opened. BepiColombo is now ready to search for these answers. There are many scientific goals related to geology and magnetosphere of Mercury - for example why is it reducing? -The authors of today's article, explain that BepiColombo can also test Einstein (again).

One of the original predictions of Einstein's theory of gravity, General Relativity, was the movement of Mercury around the Sun. For a long time, the observations showed that the perihelion of Mercury (see figure 2) advanced around the Sun more than it should if only the movement of the surrounding planets had an effect on Newtonian gravity. General Relativity fitted perfectly (or almost perfectly)- we will discover it) with an extra shift of 43 seconds of arc per century, and eliminated the confusion around this strange phenomenon. Even a new planet, Vulcano, had been designed to try to explain the mysterious movement.

However, as good as our measurements are, the advance of Mercury's perihelion, there is still room for error. Today's article shows that there is another relativistic effect in the movement of Mercury around the Sun due to a third body, for example another planet, entering the scene. Including a third body in the calculations causes the gravitational potential of the Sun to be disturbed very slightly, and therefore the movement of Mercury is altered. The correction is very small - of the order of a few parts of a million relative to the 43 seconds of arc per advancing century. However, BepiColombo is ready to reach that level of precision measurements.

Figure 2: The blue dots represent how Mercury's perihelion - the points closest to the Sun - moves around the orbit. The image is here.

BepiColombo will orbit Mercury for a year, and hopefully it will determine during that time if there is a one-part-per-million correction. If there is, General Relativity lives to fight another day, otherwise we might need to think of a way to modify the theory to take this alteration into account.

103 years and counting ...

General Relativity has passed all the tests that have been released in the last 100 years, and more recently received more validation due to the detection of gravitational waves that were predicted from this theory. The expectation is that BepiColombo will prove that General Relativity is even more accurate, and although it may not be as exciting as needing to rewrite one of the most accepted theories of physics, the fact that we can now test it at levels of precision A few parts of a million is a feat in itself. BepiColombo is already on its way to Mercurio, and we have 7 years of waiting before the results arrive.
