Benintendi and the Red Sox stop the Astros 8-6 for a 3-1 ALCS lead
Left fielder Andrew Benintendi made a diving catch with bases loaded for the final, and the Boston Red Sox stopped the Houston Astros 8-6 on Wednesday night to take a 3-1 lead in the Serie A. American League Championship.
Driven by a questionable call of fanatic interference and another Jackie Bradley Jr. homer in an exciting round-trip game, the Red Sox moved within a win of their first World Series trip since winning the game. 2013 title.
Craig Kimbrel got an unstable save of six outs, helped by a rocket throw by right fielder Mookie Betts and the daring capture of Alex Bregman over the sinking of the sinking liner to the left. If the ball had passed in front of a Benintendi who was recharging, he could easily have scored three runs and won the game for Houston.
"Beni took a shot, he had a big jump, and he got it," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said.
In contrast, the Red Sox improved to 4-0 on the road in these playoffs and came little by little to eliminate the defending champions of the World Series.
"This game was incredibly good on both sides: big at-bats, big plays," Astros manager AJ Hinch said. "The difference in that game was literally a couple of inches."
The fifth game is Thursday night in Houston, where ace Justin Verlander will pitch for the Astros with his season on the line. David Price, who was warming up in the bullpen at the end of Game 4, will start Boston with three days off after Chris Sale discarded on Wednesday while recovering from an stomach illness.
Bradley hit a home run in the sixth inning, his last big swing for a Red Sox team that was eliminated from the postseason by Houston in the Division Series last year.
Boston won three games in a row after a loss in Game 1, and it came with some controversy after Houston star Jose Altuve was denied a two-run homer in the first inning and was sent off because of interference from fans.
"José pays the highest price because the trajectory of the ball looked like it was going to leave the stadium," Hinch said. "I changed the entire entry."
Boston was followed by one with two outs in the sixth when Christian Vazquez doubled to the right center. The center fielder George Springer was about to jump, but the ball escaped his glove.
Bradley, who hit a grand slam in Game 3 and a three-run double in Game 2, put the Red Sox at 6-5 with his right field shot in rookie Josh James's next pitch.
"I'm very proud of him, what he did in the second part of the season and what he did tonight and in this series, it's amazing," Cora said.
Boston got insurance in the seventh when Lance McCullers walked in a race after taking over Ryan Pressly with the bases loaded and two outs. J.D. Martinez increased the lead with a single RBI in the eighth.
Houston cut the lead to two in an RBI groundout from Altuve in the eighth. Right fielder Josh Reddick caught the lining that Betts sinks with the bases loaded to finish the top of the ninth.
Red Sox starter Rick Porcello allowed seven hits and four runs in four innings in a wild game that lasted 4 hours and 33 minutes. Joe Kelly was the winner after allowing a run in the fifth.
Rafael Devers and Xander Bogaerts had two RBIs each for the Red Sox, who have outscored their opponents 36-12 on the road this postseason.
Carlos Correa of Houston, who has had back problems for months, had three hits and two RBIs in his first multihit play this postseason. Springer and Tony Kemp hit a solo homer for the Astros, which left 13 runners at the base.
A rusty Charlie Morton allowed three hits, three runs and two walks in just 2 1/3 innings. He also threw two wild pitches on his first start for the Astros since the end of the regular season on September 30.
James took over and gave four hits and three runs while striking out five in 3 2/3 innings during his second postseason appearance.
Morton had problems with control from the start and knocked down Betts before a unique walk to Martinez. A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance before a two-run single by Devers sent them home for the Red Sox to have two runs in the first inning for the third straight game.
The disputed home run call came at the bottom of the inning when the referees ruled that at least one fan interfered with Betts' attempt to catch a jump over the wall of right field with the ball hit by Altuve.
Team boss Joe West, working on the right field line, pointed out the interference of the fans after Betts could not catch the ball and the ball bounced on the field.
"Joe calls him right away and I saw the replay," Cora said. "And I said, they're not going to reverse this in any way, I was pretty sure."
The call was kept after a repeat review that lasted 3 minutes, 13 seconds. Altuve was discarded and Springer was sent back to first base.
Hinch moved Bregman to first place from third place after the Red Sox accompanied him seven times in the first three games. However, the reorganization did not help the Astros, since Bregman went from 0 to 5 and was hit by a pitch.
Springer got the Astros in a race when he sent Porcello's first pitch of the third inning to the seats in right field. Unlike Altuve, this was a person who did not hesitate, navigating seven rows in the stands in a pocket of about four fans who wore Red Sox shirts.
Altuve followed with a double that hit the wall in left field. The Most Valuable Player of the American League last year, who has been designated Houston's designated hitter while dealing with a knee injury, grimaced when he slipped into second place on the play and was limping after getting standing.
"He's a tough kid," Hinch said. "He is giving us everything he has, but he is suffering."
Josh Reddick tied the game at 3 with two outs when he hit a single to the center left to score Altuve, who still looked uncomfortable when he trotted home.
Kemp gave Houston its first lead when he knocked down a Porcello slider on the wall in the corner of right field in the fourth.
Benintendi's second double came in the fifth and scored with a two-out single from Bogaerts to tie at 4.
The simple scoring of Correa made 5-4 in the lower part of the inning.
Small fraternity
Bradley joined Nomar Garciaparra (1998) as the only Red Sox players who had at least three RBIs in three consecutive postseason games.
UNTIL NEXT TIME
Verlander is 6-1 with a 2.44 ERA in eight postseason appearances for the Astros. He allowed two hits and two runs in six innings for victory in Houston's 7-2 victory in Game 1 at Fenway Park.
