The eastern United States is well known for its large sample of vibrant foliage each fall. But western states grow more than pine and evergreen palms; They also show a spectacular fall color. These images show deciduous trees in northern Utah painting the mountains in shades of red, orange, yellow and purple.

the Operational Earth Imager (OLI) in Landsat 8 acquired the images on September 27, 2018, as the hours of light were shortened and the temperatures cooled. The top image, displayed above the elevation data of the shuttle radar survey mission (SRTM), shows the Ogden valley in the foreground. The valley is located in the middle of the Wasatch mountain range and is accessible by three scenic roads. The Ogden River Scenic Trail, for example, winds for approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) through the Ogden canyon, which connects the city of North Ogden with the Ogden Valley.

The second image is a nadir view (in a straight line) showing the city of Ogden at the base of the colorful mountain slopes. Hikers can reach the summit of 2,448 meters (8,031 feet) from Lewis Peak through a network of trails in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. It is not the tallest mountain in the vicinity, but offers views of the nearby peaks of Willard and Ben Lomond. Along the route, you can find fir trees mixed with wildflowers in July and August and with colorful deciduous trees in September. The United States Forest Service famous on the Lewis Peak trail: "There may not be a better place to see the colors of autumn than along this route."

Colorful leaves adorn a variety of tree species in Utah's forests, including barren maples, trembling poplars, thickets and hawthorn. The timing of the color change in Utah this year was approximately as expected, according to news reports. In other parts of the country, from Maine to the mid-Atlantic, the color appeared a few weeks late due to the low daily temperatures that have been warmer than normal.

The colder temperatures and the longer nights that arrive with the autumn make the trees stop producing chlorophyll. In the absence of this green pigment, the yellow, orange and red pigments left behind become visible. Climatic factors, such as too much or too little water and the timing of that water, also affect the intensity and synchronization of the color.
