The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the largest atom destroyer in the world, has just discovered at least two previously unknown particles.

The 17-mile (27 km) underground ring near Geneva recently discovered two baryons and a hint of another particle, According to a statement from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), that executes the LHC. Baryons are fundamental subatomic particles. which are each composed of three quarks. Quarks, in turn, are even smaller particles that come in different "flavors": up, down, up, down, weird and charming.

Each type of baryon has a different mixture of quarks. Protons, for example, are baryons and consist of two quarks up and one quark down each, according to the statement. The two newly discovered particles are classified as lower baryons.

He[[7 strange facts about quarks]

The first, called Σb (6097) +, consists of a bottom quark and two quarks up, while the second, called Σb (6097) -, is composed of a bottom quark and two quarks down.

The LHCb experiment (b means beauty) found these particles breaking the protons together and observing the background velocity of certain particle decomposition events. The experiment looked for "bumps" or peaks above that speed, which could indicate signals from previously unknown particles, according to the statement.

Similar particles were observed in a previous experiment conducted at Fermilab in Illinois, but those particles differed in that they had less mass than their newly discovered siblings, according to the statement. The bottom baryons discovered at CERN are about 6 times more massive than the protons, according to the statement. The number "6097" refers to its mass in millions of electronic volts or MeV. (The mass of a proton is approximately 938 MeV).

As for the third potential particle, the researchers only discovered indications that it exists. Called Z sub c-(4100), this particle could be a weird inn, an unstable type of particle that briefly flows into existence during high-energy collisions and that consists of two quarks and two antiquarks.

The CERN collisions showed some evidence that this elusive meson exists, but the evidence was below the statistical threshold that physicists use to affirm the "discovery" of a new particle.
