At least 11 dead as earthquake topple homes in northern Haiti
PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - An earthquake that shook Haiti's northern coast late on Saturday killed at least 11 people and wounded more than a hundred when several buildings collapsed in the impoverished Caribbean country, authorities said.
The magnitude 5.9 earthquake centered about 12 miles (20 km) west-northwest of the coastal city of Port-de-Paix, at a depth of 11.7 km, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Northwest Police Chief Jackson Hilaire said at least seven people were killed and more than 100 wounded in Port-de-Paix.
Four other people died in and around the city of Gros-Morne further south, including a boy hit by a falling building, said Mayor Jean Renel Tide.
The earthquake was one of the strongest to hit Haiti since 2010 saw a magnitude 7.0 earthquake near the capital, Port-au-Prince, which killed tens of thousands of people.
In a publication on Twitter, President Jovenel Moise urged people to remain calm after the civil protection agency reported that the latest earthquake had triggered panic outbreaks in northern cities.
The agency said that Port-de-Paix, Gros-Morne, the city of Chansolme and the island of Tortuga had suffered some of the worst damage. Some houses were destroyed, he said.
The newspaper Le Nouvelliste said that one person died when an audience collapsed in Gros-Morne and that the detainees were released from a police cell that was damaged.
The quake also damaged the facade of a church in the city of Plaisance and a house next door collapsed, the newspaper said.
Saturday's earthquake was felt in Port-au-Prince, but initial reports on Twitter said it had not caused further damage there.
