Astrophysics in the Canary Islands generates 3.5 euros for every euro invested
The so-called Sector of Astrophysics in the Canary Islands (Spain) is made up of the IAC, by the numerous scientific institutions around the world that operate in the Observatories of the Canary Islands, by the business network dedicated to the industry and the services related to these facilities. . After analyzing the activity of the sector in the Islands, Juan José Díaz Hernández, full professor at the ULL and principal investigator of the study that was presented this morning at the Central Headquarters of the IAC in La Laguna, estimates that for every euro invested in these companies public and private during 2016 generated 3.56 euros in the Gross Domestic Product of the Canary Islands.
At the press conference in which Rafael Rebolo López, director of the IAC, and Anselmo Sosa Méndez, manager of the Office of Institutional Projects and Transfer of Research Results of this institute, have also participated, the results of this research recently published in the form of a book, with the collaboration of the ULL, the General Foundation University of La Laguna and the Center for Consumer Studies (CESCO).
In the work entitled "Study on the Economic and Social Impact of Astrophysics in the Canary Islands" the contribution of the economic activity developed during 2016 is measured both by the IAC and the more than 70 institutions of 25 countries that operate in the Observatory of the Teide (Izaña, Tenerife) and the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (Garafía, La Palma), as well as the business network dedicated to the provision of all kinds of supplies and the provision of accommodation, catering, transport and auxiliary services. in astrophysical facilities. Among the most significant data of the study, it stands out that the production of goods and services derived from the whole of the sector analyzed in this work amounted to more than 124 million euros in 2016. In addition, it contributed to the creation of 1,554 annual jobs on time complete, including both the workers hired directly by the sector and the derivatives thereof.
The analysis made from this research also concludes that, although the Sector of Astrophysics in Tenerife represents 0.43% of the island's GDP and 0.34% of salaried employment, in La Palma this figure amounts to a 3 , 3% of the Island's GDP and 2.3% of full-time salaried employment.
The director of the IAC recalled that this report was already presented at the last meeting of the Governing Council of the center, which was attended by both the president of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, and the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Pedro Duque, among others. "Although we had estimates, we had not seen it this way. We knew how much we received from public administrations, but we did not know exactly the economic return to society, "recalled Rebolo. He added that "public administrations receive 40% more taxes and social contributions than they transfer nominatively to the IAC."
For its part, the OTRI manager of the IAC, Anselmo Sosa, stressed that "this center has been collecting, since 2005, data on the economic impact of user institutions, mainly the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, because today it is a need to offer , not only the technological and scientific value provided by the set of scientific facilities and their human capital, but also the value it represents for society ".
In future actions, the social impact of the activity of this sector will be addressed in depth, "contributing - Anselmo Sosa emphasized - both to improve education in our region, generate inspirations and scientific vocations and, ultimately, to improve social perception and enrichment cultural ", not only in La Palma and Tenerife, but in the rest of the Autonomous Community.
After a few words of thanks to all the people who have collaborated in this study, the main author of the research, Juan José Díaz Hernández, explained that "the use of the model based on the Input-Output tables and the Keynesian cost multiplier , has made it possible to assess the final production, the full-time employment generated, the salary income paid and the gross added value of the Astrophysics Sector in the Canary Islands in 2016. " "In the same way," he added, "the contribution of this sector to the state and regional tax collection, as well as the General Treasury of Social Security, has been estimated."
Looking to the future, the researcher reflected on the impact that this network of institutions and companies will have to attract new and important investments to the Canary Islands, mainly through the construction and start-up of new telescopes, such as the European Solar Telescope (EST). ), the new 4-meter robotic telescope (Liverpool 2 Telescope) or the Cherenkov Telescope Network (CTA), which already has one of its first telescopes at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM). Also, the report affects the weight that the choice of the ORM could have as the headquarters of the Thirty-Meter Telescope (TMT), which could double the current impact figures.
In short, the study shows that "Astrophysics can play an important role in the Canary Islands when it comes to promoting new economic development strategies that contribute to diversify its productive structure, while at the same time, through investment in research and development, new sustainable business models with high added value ".
