Arrested official of the Treasury, accused of leaking data from the Russian investigation



A senior employee of the Treasury Department was arrested this week and charged with leaking "highly sensitive information" about suspects in the high-profile investigation into Russia's meddling in the presidential election, the Justice Department said on Wednesday.


Natalie Mayflower Sours Edwards, Senior Advisor to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network of the Treasury Department (FinCEN), allegedly "betrayed her position of trust" by leaking confidential bank reports on the Russian Embassy and suspected defendants in the investigation of Russian collusion of special lawyer Robert Muller Government said in a statement.


Federal prosecutors said Edwards, of Quinton, Va., Provided a journalist with confidential material, including suspicious activity reports (SAR) about the former president of the Trump campaign. Paul manafort and political consultant Rick Gates, according to the statement.

Banks must submit suspicious activity reports to the Treasury Department when they observe transactions that raise doubts about possible financial misconduct.


Edwards, 40, was also accused of illegally disclosing confidential financial data about the Russian Embassy and the alleged Russian agent Maria Butina, according to the statement.


Investigators said they found evidence that Edwards had leaked "numerous" SARs between October 2017 and the time of his arrest Tuesday.

"At the time of Edwards' arrest, he was in possession of a flash drive that appeared to be the flash drive in which he stored the illegally reported SARs, and a cell phone with numerous communications through an encrypted application in which he transmitted SAR and Other governments sensitive information to Reporter-1, "said a federal official in the complaint.


Authorities say she took photographs of the documents and then leaked it to a reporter. When the police authorities interrogated them, Edwards confessed that he delivered the documents to a reporter through an encrypted application.

The investigators also connected Edwards to the reporter in question through telephone records. Edwards admitted that he acceded to the SARs, photographed them and sent them to the reporter using an encrypted application, according to the complaint.


The Justice Department did not disclose the identity of the reporter, but the loading documents listed nearly a dozen articles published by BuzzFeed News during the past year and a half.


A spokesperson for BuzzFeed did not immediately respond to the request for comments from ABC News.
