ANALYSIS: Kavanaugh's confirmation marks the triumph of tribalism
In an episode without a shortage of losers, tribalism prevailed.

Senate confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh this weekend means that the seat of the swing in the Supreme Court has been occupied by someone over whom the Americans are very divided. It reaches the seat after the most divisive processes, with virtually all government institutions suffering a measure of potential harm.
In almost every turn of the long and unusual struggle, party actions worsened the expected natural divisions. The Senate process was revealed as broken. Kavanaugh's defense of himself was in favor of any precedent for a candidate for the Supreme Court.
And president Donald Trump - perhaps in the least surprising part of the drama - he used everything to sharpen the political wedges.

Perhaps the most disheartening aspect of the harsh and emotional three-week duration since Christine Blasey Ford presented herself was the way in which political alliances seemed to overwhelm any search for facts. Polls showed that partisan affiliation, rather than gender, age or other variables, was the most predictive factor in whether voters believed in Ford or Kavanaugh.
In the end, the Senate complied with the country's divisions as cleanly as possible, with only one Democrat and a single Republican voting with colleagues across the aisle. Trump treated the Republican Party's only defection as an affront that he quickly predicted would cost Senator Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, his career.
"I think the people of Alaska will never forgive her for what she did," the president told The Washington Post.
If the road to Kavanaugh to join the Supreme Court was ugly, the road does not open from here. Both parties are talking about the fight as a key to their medium-term motivation efforts, with the congressional elections only a month away.

Already, some Democrats are talking about the possibility of impeachment proceedings against Kavanaugh, questioning the legitimacy of his ascension.
"He's going to be on the Supreme Court with a big stain and a big asterisk after his name," Sen. Mazie Hirono, Democrat of Hawaii, told Jonathan Karl on ABC's "This Week."
The final vote on Kavanaugh came amid scandalous protests in the Senate chamber and beyond. Protesters stormed the doors of the Supreme Court building even as he was being sworn in for an appointment that would last his entire life.
The majority leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, perhaps the man most responsible for making the nomination in a confirmation, took it all and predicted a favor for the Republican Party.
"I want to thank the mafia, because they did the only thing we had trouble doing, which was to energize our base," McConnell said in an interview shortly after the final vote.
It was easy for the participants in this national drama to get tired and frustrated.
"You can only hope that Kavanaugh's nomination is where the process finally gets to the bottom," said Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in a speech in which she announced her support for Kavanaugh, tilting the Senate's balance in her favor. .
The conversations will continue in the Senate and beyond on how to learn and grow from these last weeks, but there are no good solutions that are evident. It is tempting to say that there are no true winners in what has just been presented before the nation.
However, Trump did not find a small measure of validation in all this. He raised partisan rhetoric at critical moments, and ended up keeping his promises with a second judge confirmed in the Supreme Court.
The White House gave a victory spin that was based on partisanship: "Instead of a 6-3 liberal Supreme Court under Hillary Clinton, we now have a conservative Supreme Court of 5-4 under President @realDonald Trump, consolidating a tremendous legacy for the President and "A better future for the United States," wrote White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.
Congratulations to Judge Kavanaugh! Instead of a 6-3 liberal Supreme Court under Hillary Clinton, we now have a conservative Supreme Court of 5-4 under the presidency @realDonaldTrump, consolidating a tremendous legacy for the president and a better future for the United States
Part of the president's legacy is the tribalism that defined his political rise and helped consolidate achievements like this. The United States is as divided as ever, and a president who has exploited those divisions is vindicated by how things turned out.
